Determining alphas from the hyperfine splitting mUpsilon(1S)-mEta(b)

Abstract

The measurement of the etab mass, together with a QCD result for the hyperfine splitting EHFS=MUpsilon(1S)-Metab, allows us to determine the strong coupling constant alphas at a low energy scale. The result alphas(MUpsilon(1S))=0.197 0.002Delta EHFSexp 0.002scheme 0.002delta <G2> 0.006delta mb 0.005ho, alphas(MZ0)=0.124 0.001Delta EHFSexp 0.001scheme 0.001delta <G2> 0.003delta mb 0.002ho, is compatible with the current world average of alphas reported by the Particle Data Group, and shows that the experimental lowest-lying b b hyperfine splitting can be reproduced in terms of a perturbative and nonperturbative QCD contribution.
