A tracial Nullstellensatz
Abstract
The main result of this note is a tracial Nullstellensatz for free noncommutative polynomials evaluated at tuples of matrices of all sizes: Suppose f1,...,fr,f are free polynomials, and tr(f) vanishes whenever all tr(fj) vanish. Then either 1 or f is a linear combination of the fj modulo sums of commutators.
