Observation of the decay Z\,+-μ+μ-+- with the CMS detector

Abstract

The observation of the Z boson rare decay to a meson and two oppositely charged same-flavour leptons, + -, where represents the sum of J/ and (2S)/\, X, and =μ,e, is presented. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9\,fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13\,TeV accumulated by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The signal is observed with a significance in excess of 5 standard deviations. Removing contributions from (2S) decays to J/, the signal is interpreted as being entirely from Z/\,+-, with its fiducial branching fraction relative to that of the decay Zμ+μ-μ+μ- measured to be B(Z/\,+-)B(Zμ+μ-μ+μ-)=0.70 0.18\, (stat) 0.05\, (syst). This result is obtained with the assumption of no J/ polarisation, where extreme polarisation scenarios can create -24\% to +22\% variations.
