Inter-scale energy transfer in turbulence from the viewpoint of subfilter scales
Abstract
This brief is organized as follows. In Section 2 we introduce the filter-scale energy equations that lead to the subfilter-scale dissipation term P. We discuss the properties of the sources and sinks of kinetic energy, and identify our target features concerning an optimal inter-scale energy transfer (ISET) term. A similar analysis is performed in Section 3 for the kinetic energy associated with the subfilter velocities, and a new ISET term T is introduced. Comparisons between T and P for different flows and for various filters are offered in Section 4 and Section 5. Finally, we present our conclusions in Section 6.
