Abstract
This paper addresses the working principle of neutrino telescopes, important detector parameters as well as the layout and performance of current and future neutrino telescopes. It was prepared for the book "Probing Particle Physics with Neutrino Telescopes", C.~P\'erez de los Heros, editor, 2020 (World Scientific) in 2018.
