BMO-type functionals, total variation, and -convergence

Abstract

We study the BMO-type functional (f, Rn), which can be used to characterize BV functions f∈ BV( Rn). The -limit of this functional, taken with respect to L1loc-convergence, is known to be 14 |Df|( Rn). We show that the -limit with respect to L∞loc-convergence is \[ 14 |Da f|( Rn)+ 14 |Dc f|( Rn)+ 12 |Dj f|( Rn), \] which agrees with the ``pointwise'' limit in the case of SBV functions.
