Non-Expansive Matrix Based number Systems
Abstract
Let M = (matrix 1 & 1 \\ 0 & 1 matrix) be a 2 × 2 Jordan block with eigenvalue 1, and let D = \(smallmatrix0 \\ 1 smallmatrix), (smallmatrix 0 \\ -1 smallmatrix )\. In this paper, we answer a question of Caldwell, Hare, and V\'avra about the minimal length representation of ( smallmatrix a \\ b smallmatrix ) = Σi=0k-1 Mi di with di ∈ D. Further, we extend the work of Caldwell, Hare, and V\'avra to consider the case of n × n Jordan blocks with eigenvalue -1.
