The 2-Twist Spun Trefoil Has Crossing Number Six

Abstract

We study the tri-plane crossing number, that is, the minimal number of crossings in a tri-plane diagram for a bridge trisection of a knotted sphere in S4. We show that every 2-knot in S4 that admits a bridge trisection with at most five crossings is ribbon. As a consequence, we show that the 2-twist spin of the trefoil has crossing number 6. This is the first such computation for a non-trivial knotted surface.
