Obstructions to the existence of good moduli spaces of Ar-stable curves

Abstract

We study obstructions to the existence of separated good moduli spaces for open substacks of the moduli stack Mg,nr of Ar-stable curves. Our approach is based on an analysis of families of curves over ΘR and STR, building on prior work on the local geometry of Mg,nr. We prove that Mg,nr is neither Θ- nor S-complete. We then construct an open substack Ug,nr ⊂ Mg,nr and show that the counterexamples identified in Mg,nr do not occur within this substack. Moreover, we prove that Ug,nr cannot be strictly contained in any other substack of Mg,nr that admit a separated good moduli space. Furthermore, we show that the inclusion Ug,nr ⊂ Mg,nr is both Θ- and S-complete. These results will be used in a forthcoming paper to prove that Ug,nr admits a separated, and indeed proper, good moduli space for r ≤ 5.
