Coherence Effects in Charmonium Production off Nuclei : Consequences for J/ Suppression
Abstract
The probabilistic Glauber formula for nuclear absorption used in the literature is only valid at low energies and x+ 0. Due to energy conservation, σabs is replaced by an effective cross-section σabs + x+γ (σcc-N - σabs) which increases with x+ and tends to the total cc-N cross-section σcc-N. Experimental data can be described with σabs 4 5mb and σcc-N 15 20mb. At high energies, due to the increase of the coherence length, this formula changes. The main change is the replacement of σabs by σcc-N -- for all values of x+, as s ∞. Thus, if σcc-N > σabs the J/ suppression due to nuclear interaction will increase with energy.
