Exciton superfluidity in two-dimensional bilayers at zero and high magnetic fields

Abstract
We study interlayer exciton superfluidity versus layer separation in two-dimensional electron-hole bilayers at zero magnetic field and quantum Hall bilayers at total filling νT=1. Unscreened Hartree-Fock theory predicts coherence at every finite separation, with an energy scale decaying inversely with separation at large distances. We examine how screening, correlations, and spatial instabilities modify this prediction. At zero field, we solve the linearized gap equation with the full momentum and frequency dependence of the interaction screened within the random-phase approximation, without an imposed cutoff. The apparent plasmon enhancement of pairing in the ladder approximation is largely cancelled by the second-order crossed-rung correction. Static screening determines the leading pairing exponent in the controlled high-density limit at fixed separation. At large separation, the pairing scale falls exponentially with squared separation while the instability persists. Extending this result to fixed density assumes Fermi-liquid layers and higher-order dynamical corrections subleading to the static pairing interaction. At high field, we obtain an analytic uniform Hartree-Fock saddle point in the lowest Landau level, coherent at every finite separation. Within Hartree-Fock theory, its finite-wave-vector collective-mode instability favors an excitonic supersolid, distinguishing loss of spatial uniformity from loss of coherence. We conjecture that the quantum Hall bilayer evolves continuously toward weak pairing of composite fermions, with a scale far below the mean-field prediction at large separation. This suppression could produce an apparent critical separation at finite temperature without a ground-state quantum phase transition. The comparison separates the existence, energy scale, and spatial stability of interlayer coherence.
