Hamiltonian dynamics with nonconservative forces on extended phase space: An analytical mechanics derivation
Joseph T. A Peterson, Manoranjan Majji, John L. Junkins
Abstract
Although nonconservative forces and extended phase space are individually common topics in Hamiltonian dynamics, their combination is seldom developed explicitly. This note derives the full Hamiltonian equations of motion for nonconservative and nonautonomous dynamical systems formulated on extended phase space. Particular attention is given to the momentum coordinate and generalized force associated with time. The classic analytical dynamics framework is used throughout, with all developments formulated in terms of arbitrary symplectic coordinates (i.e., canonical coordinates) or functions thereof.
