Abstract
We study the dynamic purification of a continuously monitored quantum harmonic oscillator coupled to a thermal bath, where the control is the quadrature measurement angle of up to two detectors with prescribed strengths and efficiencies. Within the Gaussian regime, the conditional state covariance obeys a deterministic Riccati equation, and we ask what purity can be reached and sustained by manipulating the angle in time, in analogy with rapid-purification protocols for qubits. We propose, analyze, and compare constant-rate, greedy, vibrational, and variational monitoring strategies on the basis of sustained purity starting from the thermal bath state, and quantify to what extent they are able to maintain higher purity levels compared to lab-fixed or phase-locked detectors. We highlight structural features, operational limits, and optimal protocols from each strategy and study how model parameters shape control performance. We observe that in the absence of measurement-frame anisotropy, the time-dependent strategies achieve higher but similar performance. Once this symmetry is broken, their performances diverge, either improving or worsening depending on the relative timescales of oscillator dynamics, thermalization, and measurement.
