Rogue waves in the dam-break problem for the Kundu--Eckhaus equation

Abstract
We study rogue wave formation in the dam-break problem for the Kundu--Eckhaus equation with deterministic and randomly perturbed box initial data. For the unperturbed real box, the gauge transformation and Galilean invariance relate the intensity evolution to that of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The Kundu--Eckhaus parameter determines the phase, the real shift of the discrete spectrum and the drift velocity. We compare uniform, Gaussian and Laplace perturbations with equal variance and the same correlation scale in the underlying Gaussian field. At the larger perturbation strengths considered, the Laplace perturbations yield larger mean maximum intensities and higher exceedance probabilities for the normalized intensity at the final simulation time, but smaller amplification relative to the initial maximum intensity.
