On Higher Order Elliptic Differential Operators
David Raske
Abstract
In this note we examine the positive preserving properties, or the lack thereof, for Green's operators of elliptic differential operators on smooth, closed Riemannian manifolds. We will obtain the existence of elliptic differential operators on closed manifolds whose lowest eigenvalue is not simple, and the existence of a large family of elliptic differential operators on closed manifolds that only have signed eigenfunctions associated with the lowest eigenvalue. That is, we will see that there is both "good news" and "bad news" when one studies the positivity preserving properties of Green's operators associated with higher order elliptic differential operators on smooth, closed Riemannian manifolds and the eigenproblem for higher order elliptic differential operators on smooth, closed Riemannian manifolds.
