Abstract
Studying prestellar cores is crucial to understanding the formation of stellar and planetary systems. To date, we lack a comprehensive survey of their density and velocity structure at small scales (100-1000 au), the gas ionisation state, their lifetimes, and how these properties are influenced by the environment. A deep study into this critical stage of star formation requires a large single-dish (sub)millimetre telescope like AtLAST.
