Mass splittings in b and b*
Abstract
The charged b and *b states have recently been reported by the CDF Collaboration. The relation of their reported charge-averaged masses to expectations based on the quark model is reviewed briefly. A relation is proved among the I = 1 electromagnetic mass differences 1 M(+) - M(-), *1 M(*+)- M(*-), b1 M(b+) - M(b-), and *b1 M(b*+) - M(b*-). The relation is *b1 - b1 = (ms/mb)(*1 - 1), leading to the expectation *b1 - b1 = 0.40 0.07 MeV.
