Abstract
We investigate in detail a modified version of the Fritzsch scheme where the diagonal entries (Mu,d)22 are introduced as free parameters instead of being zero. We find that (Mu)22 and (Md)22 are restricted to l in the range mu-mc≤ (Mu)22< mt-mc and md-ms≤ (Md)22< mb-ms. In the context of this scheme, we obtain the ratio |Vtd| |Vts|≈md ms under quite general conditions whereas the ratio |Vub| |Vcb| is sensitive to the values of (Mu)22 and (Md)22. The two independent phases are found to take rather preferred values.
