On the fourth moment in the Rankin-Selberg problem

Abstract

If (x) := Σn xcn - Cx denotes the error term in the classical Rankin-Selberg problem, then it is proved that ∫0X 4(x) x ε X3+ε, ∫0X 14(x) x ε X11/2+ε, where 1(x) = ∫0x(u) du. The latter bound is, up to `ε', best possible.
