We propose a precise definition of multidimensional fluids generated by self-gravitating extended objects such as strings and membranes: a p-dimensional perfect fluid is a smooth involutive p-dimensional distribution on a spacetime, each integral manifold of which is a timelike, connected, immersed submanifold of dimension, p -- representing the history of a

We present a calculation of asymmetric nuclear matter properties in a relativistic Brueckner Hartree Fock framework. The fusion cross-sections for ^{16}O + ^{208}Pb, measured to high precision, enable the extraction of the distribution of fusion barriers. Using the `Riemann Problem with zeros' method, Ward has constructed exact solutions to a (2+1)-dimensional integrable Chiral Model, which exhibit solitons with nontrivial scattering. There have been known "exact" beta functions for the gauge coupling in N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories, the so-called NSVZ beta functions. Shifman and Vainshtein (SV) further related these beta functions to the exact 1-loop running of the "Wilsonian" gauge coupling. All these results, however, remain somewhat mysterious. We show how $N=4, D=4$ duality of Montonen and Olive can be derived for all gauge groups using geometric engineering in the context of type II strings, where it reduces to T-duality. We prove that there is no power-counting renormalizable nonabelian generalization of the abelian topological mass mechanism in four dimensions. Quark distribution and spectator functions are estimated in a diquark spectator model. A truncation scheme for the Dyson-Schwinger equations of QCD in Landau gauge is presented which implements the Slavnov-Taylor identities for the 3-point vertex functions. Neglecting contributions from 4-point correlations such as the 4-gluon vertex function and irreducible scattering kernels, a closed system of equations for the propagators is obtained. For
Measurement of the Proton Structure Function F_2 and σ_{tot}^{γ^* p} at Low Q^2 and Very Low x at HERA
hep-exZEUS Collaboration
A small electromagnetic sampling calorimeter, installed in the ZEUS experiment in 1995, significantly enhanced the acceptance for very low x and low Q^2 inelastic neutral current scattering, e^{+}p \to e^{+}X, at HERA. A measurement of the proton structure function F_2 and the total virtual photon-proton (γ^*p) cross-section is presented for 0.11 \le Q^{2} \

We describe an effective method for calculating certain infinite sums, generalizations of the classical Bernoulli polynomials. As shown by Edward Witten in his papers on two-dimensional gauge theories, the correlation functions of two-dimensional topological Yang-Mills theory (or intersection numbers on moduli spaces of flat connections) can be given in the

We investigate modifications to the $k_\perp$-clustering jet algorithm which preserve the advantages of the original Durham algorithm while reducing non-perturbative corrections and providing better resolution of jet substructure. We find that a simple change in the sequence of clustering (combining smaller-angle pairs first), together with the `freezing' of

We derive the exact equations of motion for the random neighbor version of the Olami-Feder-Christensen earthquake model in the infinite-size limit. We solve them numerically, and compare with simulations of the model for large numbers of sites. We find perfect agreement. But we do not find any scaling or phase transitions, except in the conservative limit. T

A new first order action for type IIB Dirichlet 3-brane is proposed. Its form is inspired by the superfield equations of motion obtained recently from the generalized action principle. The action involves auxiliary symmetric spin tensor fields. It seems promising for a reformulation of the generalized action in a structure most adequate for investigating the

Since gluons in QCD are interacting fundamental constituents just as quarks are, we expect that in addition to mesons made from a quark and an antiquark, there should also be glueballs and hybrids (bound states of quarks, antiquarks and gluons). In general, these states would mix strongly with the conventional q-bar-q mesons. However, they can also have exot
Inclusive Single- and Dijet Rates in Next-to-Leading Order QCD for gamma^*proton and gamma^*gamma Collisions

We present one- and two-jet inclusive cross sections for gamma*gamma scattering and virtual photoproduction in ep collisions. The hard cross sections are calculated in next-to-leading order QCD. Soft and collinear singularities are extracted using the phase-space-slicing method. The initial state singularity of the virtual photon depends logarithmically its&

Exclusive charmless B decays to $\eta'$ and $\eta$ are studied in the standard effective Hamiltonian approach. The effective coefficients that take into account nonfactorizable effects in external and internal W-emission amplitudes are fixed by experiment. Factorization is applied to the matrix elements of QCD, electroweak penguin operators and next-to-leadi

We address the two-dimensional bimolecular annihilation reaction $A + A \to \emptyset$ in the presence of random impurities. Impurities with sufficiently long-ranged interaction energies are known to lead to anomalous diffusion, $<r^2(t)> \sim t^{1-δ}$, in the absence of reaction. Applying renormalization group theory to a field theoretic description of this

We study 1+1-dimensional theories of vector and hypermultiplets with (4,4) supersymmetry. Despite strong infrared fluctuations, these theories flow in general to distinct conformal field theories on the Coulomb and Higgs branches. In some cases there may be a quantum Higgs theory even when there is no classical Higgs branch. The Higgs branches of certain suc

The possibility of spontaneous breaking of CP symmetry by the expectation values of orbifold moduli is investigated with particular reference to $CP$ violating phases in soft supersymmetry breaking terms. The effect of different mechanisms for stabilizing the dilaton and the form of the non-perturbative superpotential on the existence and size of these phase
