It is shown that double inflation (two minimally coupled massive scalar fields) can produce correlated adiabatic and isocurvature primordial perturbations. Depending on the two relevant parameters of the model, the contributions to the primordial perturbations are computed, with special emphasis on the correlation, which can be quantitatively represented by

The shell type SNR RXJ1713.7-3946 is a new SNR discovered by the ROSAT all sky survey. Recently, strong non-thermal X-ray emission from the northwest part of the remnant was detected by the ASCA satellite. PKS 1004+13: A High-Inclination, Highly-Absorbed Radio-Loud QSO -- The First Radio-Loud BAL QSO at Low Redshift?
astro-phBeverley J. Wills, W. N. Brandt, A. Laor
The existence of BAL outflows in only radio-quiet QSOs was thought to be an important clue to mass ejection and the radio-loud - radio-quiet dichotomy. Recently a few radio-loud BAL QSOs have been discovered at high redshift. We present evidence that PKS 1004+13 is a radio-loud BAL QSO. It would be the first known at low-redshift (z = 0.24), and one of the m

In this invited talk I show how the reddest and rarest galaxies at high redshift ($z \simeq 1.5$) can be used to set the stellar evolution clock. I argue that one can confidently compute the collapse redshift of these objects. This yields to a high collapse redshift ($z>6$) and therefore their age is well constrained (in all cosmologies) between 3 and 4 Gyr.

The continuum shape of 26 broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs is shown to be virtually identical to that of non-BAL QSOs when the spectra of the former are dereddened. A procedure for dereddening of BAL QSO spectra is introduced, based on measurement of the flux in three bands and determination of the colour excess in comparison with an unreddened spectrum. Thi

A new algorithm for the derivation of low-density series for percolation on directed lattices is introduced and applied to the square lattice bond and site problems. Numerical evidence shows that the computational complexity grows exponentially, but with a growth factor $λ< \protect{\sqrt[8]{2}}$, which is much smaller than the growth factor $λ= \protect{\sq
Orbital Dynamics: The Origin of Anomalous Magnon Softening in Ferromagnetic Manganites
cond-mat.str-elG. Khaliullin, R. Kilian
We study the renormalization of magnons by charge and coupled orbital-lattice fluctuations in colossal magnetoresistance compounds. The model considered is an orbitally degenerate double-exchange system coupled to Jahn-Teller active phonons. The modulation of ferromagnetic bonds by low-energy orbital fluctuations is identified as the main origin of the unusu

A picture for thermodynamics of the glassy state was introduced recently by us (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 79} (1997) 1317; {\bf 80} (1998) 5580). It starts by assuming that one extra parameter, the effective temperature, is needed to describe the glassy state. This approach connects responses of macroscopic observables to a field change with their temporal fluct

At room-temperature NaV2O5 was found to have the centrosymmetric space group Pmmn. This space group implies the presence of only one kind of V site in contrast with previous reports of the non-centrosymmetric counterpart P21mn. This indicates a non-integer valence state of vanadium. Furthermore, this symmetry has consequences for the interpretation of the tr
Classical Diffusion and Quantum Level Velocities: Systematic Deviations from Random Matrix Theory
chao-dynArul Lakshminarayan, Nicholas R. Cerruti, Steven Tomsovic
We study the response of the quasi-energy levels in the context of quantized chaotic systems through the level velocity variance and relate them to classical diffusion coefficients using detailed semiclassical analysis. The systematic deviations from random matrix theory, assuming independence of eigenvectors from eigenvalues, is shown to be connected to cla

We present an efficient method for fast, complete, and accurate detection of unstable periodic orbits in chaotic systems. Our method consists of a new iterative scheme and an effective technique for selecting initial points. The iterative scheme is based on the semi-implicit Euler method, which has both fast and global convergence, and only a small number of

Recent experimental results about the formation of molecular hydrogen on astrophysically relevant surfaces under conditions close to those encountered in the interstellar medium are analyzed using rate equations. The parameters of the rate equation model are fitted to temperature-programmed desorption curves obtained in the laboratory. These parameters are t

SN1998bw shot to fame by claims of association with GRB980425. Independent of its presumed association with a GRB, this SN is unusual in its radio properties. A simple interpretation of the unusually bright radio emission leads us to the conclusion that there are two shocks in this SN: a slow moving shock containing most of the ejecta and a relativistic shoc

We have compiled a catalog of late-type stars (F5-M) member of representative young disk stellar kinematic groups: the Local Association (Pleiades moving group, 20 - 150 Myr), Ursa Mayor group (Sirius supercluster, 300 Myr), and Hyades supercluster (600 Myr). Other moving groups as IC 2391 supercluster (35 Myr) and Castor Moving Group (200 Myr) have been als

Far-ultraviolet radiation is a ubiquitous, if unanticipated, phenomenon in elliptical galaxies and early-type spiral bulges. It is the most variable photometric feature associated with old stellar populations. Recent observational and theoretical evidence shows that it is produced mainly by low-mass, small-envelope, helium-burning stars in extreme horizontal

We present high angular resolution (12"-24") and high sensitivity 12CO and 13CO J=2-1 and J=1-0 observations of the HH 1-2 outflow. The observations show the molecular counterpart, moving with a velocity of approx. 30 km/s, of the optical bipolar system driven by the VLA 1 embedded source. Along the optical jet there are certain regions where the mol

The star LHS 3250 is found to be a white dwarf at a distance of 30 pc. Its absolute magnitudes (M_V = 15.72; M_bol = 16.2) put it among the least-luminous white dwarfs known. Its optical spectrum shows no features, indicating it has a DC classification, and it shows no detectable polarization, indicating it does not have a very strong magnetic field. However
Metallicity calibration of theoretical stellar SEDs using UBVRIJHKL photometry of globular clusters
astro-phP. Westera, Th. Lejeune, R. Buser
Although stellar SED models are constantly improving and seem to show similar differential tendencies as measured spectra, their absolute properties (eg. absolute flux in different wavelength regions) can still differ significantly from the measured ones. Therefore, it is necessary to "color-calibrate" the theoretical spectra to obtain realistic mode

As a result of our statistical study of 540 edge-on galaxies, we present here the images and preliminary statistical analysis of a sub-sample of 60 galaxies, that were selected to be S-type warped spirals. Computing the average volumic density of galaxies from available redshift surveys, a first analysis suggests that warped galaxies are found in denser envi
