The thermodynamics of a homopolymeric chain with both Van der Waals and highly-directional hydrogen bond interaction is studied. The effect of hydrogen bonds is to reduce dramatically the entropy of low-lying states and to give raise to long-range order and to conformations displaying secondary structures. For compact polymers a transition is found between h

In an effort to understand the glass transition, the kinetics of a spin model with frustration but no quenched randomness has been analyzed. The phenomenology of the spin model is remarkably similiar to that of structural glasses. Analysis of the model suggests that defects play a major role in dictating the dynamics as the glass transition is approached.

Using a theory which treats on equal footing transport of excited electrons and electron-phonon scattering, we are able to explain the temperature dependence of the relaxation time in Cu as recently observed by Petek, Nagano, and Ogawa. We show that the unexpected increase of the relaxation time with temperature results from the drastic change of the electro
Properties of convergence of nonextensive statistical distribution to the Levy distribution
cond-mat.stat-mechSumiyoshi Abe, A. K. Rajagopal
It is shown that the distribution derived from the principle of maximum Tsallis entropy is a superposable Levy-type distribution. Concomitantly, the leading order correction to the limit distribution is also deduced. This demonstration fills an important gap in the derivation of the Levy-stable distribution from the nonextensive statistical framework.

The Broad Histogram is a method allowing the direct calculation of the energy degeneracy $g(E)$. This quantity is independent of thermodynamic concepts such as thermal equilibrium. It only depends on the distribution of allowed (micro) states along the energy axis, but not on the energy changes between the system and its environment. Once one has obtained $g

A mechanism leading to the spin-triplet superconductivity is proposed based on the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation. The effects of anisotropy in spin fluctuation on the Cooper pairing and on the direction of d vector are examined in the one-band Hubbard model with RPA approximation. We have studied the metallic behaviour in low density GaAs hole systems, and Si electron systems, close to the apparent two-dimensional metal-insulator transition. Two observations suggest a semi-classical origin for the metallic-like behaviour. Firstly the strength of the metallic behaviour is almost independent of the symmetry of the confining potential, a

If the stellar population of the bulge contains black holes formed in the final core collapse of ordinary stars with M \ga 30 M_{\odot}, then about 25,000 stellar mass black holes should have migrated by dynamical friction into the central parsec of the Milky Way, forming a black hole cluster around the central supermassive black hole. The Predicted Signature of Neutrino Emission in Observations of Pulsating Pre-White Dwarf Stars
astro-phM. Sean O'Brien, Steven D. Kawaler
Pre-white dwarf (PWD) star evolution can be driven by energy losses from neutrino interactions in the core. We study the theoretical correlation between the Higgs mass of the minimal standard model and the scale at which new physics is expected to occur. In addition to the classic constraints of unitarity, triviality and vacuum stability, we reexamine the constraints imposed by the precision electroweak data. We then pay particular attention to the constraint impo

A cosmological pseudoscalar field coupled to hypercharge topological number density can exponentially amplify hyperelectric and hypermagnetic fields in the symmetric phase of the electroweak plasma while coherently rolling or oscillating, leading to the formation of a condensate of topological number density. The topological number can be converted, under ce

For a flat universe presently dominated by static or dynamic vacuum energy, cosmological constant (LCDM) or quintessence (QCDM), we calculate the asymptotic collapsed mass fraction as function of the present ratio of smooth energy to matter energy $\rat=(1-\omm)/\omm$. Identifying these collapsed fractions as anthropic probabilities, we find the observed pre

Model independent constraints on supersymmetric models emerge when certain couplings are drawn towards their infra-red (quasi) fixed points in the course of their renormalization group evolution. The general principles are first reviewed and the conclusions for some recent studies of theories with R-parity and baryon and lepton number violations are summariz

The possibility of determining the neutrino nature is considered in view of the most recent experimental observations. The analysis combines schemes with three and four neutrinos. The data on oscillations is put together with that from the search of neutrinoless double beta decay and results on tritium beta decay. All solar neutrino oscillation solutions are

The rare kaon decay $K^+ \ra π^- μ^+ μ^+$ is violating lepton number by two units and is investigated within the context of Majorana neutrino masses. Using a new upper bound for this decay from E865 an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass term $\m_{μμ} < 500$ GeV could be obtained. This is improving existing bounds by about one order of magnitude. Impl

We demonstrate that the angular distribution of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic final states is related to the inclusive longitudinal structure function. This relation could provide a new method of accessing $F_L(x,Q^2)$ in deep inelastic scattering measurements.

We discuss new physics search within the minimal supergravity model by using a possible large direct CP asymmetry in $B^{\pm} \to K^{\pm}ϕ, K^{0}π^{\pm}$ decays and B meson rare decays.

We present an analysis of the discovery reach for supersymmetric particles at the upgraded Tevatron collider, assuming that SUSY breaking results in universal soft breaking parameters at the grand unification scale, and that the lightest supersymmetric particle is stable and neutral. We first present a review of the literature, including the issues of unific

The tau lepton lifetime is measured with the L3 detector at LEP using the complete data taken at centre-of-mass energies around the Z pole resulting in tau_tau = 293.2 +/- 2.0 (stat) +/- 1.5 (syst) fs. The comparison of this result with the muon lifetime supports lepton universality of the weak charged current at the level of six per mille. Assuming lepton u

The $\nuebar$ flux and spectrum have been measured at a distance of about 800 m from the reactors of the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station using a segmented Gd-loaded liquid scintillator detector. Correlated positron-neutron events from the reaction $\nuebar$p$\to$e^+n were recorded for a period of 200 d including 55 d with one of the three reactors off

Recent investigations of final state interactions of W+W- events in e+e- collisions up to center of mass energies sqrt{S}=189GeV at LEP2 are reviewed. The data were used to look for color reconnection and Bose-Einstein correlations between the two color singlets of fully hadronic W events.

Cross sections for elastic photoproduction of J/Psi and Upsilon mesons are presented. For J/Psi mesons the dependence on the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy W_gammap is analysed in an extended range with respect to previous measurements of 26<=W_gammap<= 285 GeV. The measured energy dependence is parameterized as sigma_gammap proportional W_gammap^delta

We report the first measurement of a structure dependent component in the decay K^+ -> mu^+ nu gamma. Using the kinematic region where the muon kinetic energy is greater than 137 MeV and the photon energy is greater than 90 MeV, we find that the absolute value of the sum of the vector and axial-vector form factors is |F_V+F_A| =0.165 \pm 0.007 \pm 0.011. Gravity is one of the fundamental forces of Nature, and it is the dominant force in most astronomical systems. In common with all other phenomena, gravity must obey the principles of special relativity. In particular, gravitational forces must not be transmitted or communicated faster than light. This means that when the gravitational field of an object chan

It has been suggested by Israel that the Kerr singularity cannot be strong in the sense of Tipler, for it tends to cause repulsive effects. We show here that, contrary to that suggestion, nearly all null geodesics reaching this singularity do in fact terminate in Tipler's strong curvature singularity. Implications of this result are discussed in the cont
