A fundamental goal of algebraic geometry is to do for singular varieties whatever we can do for smooth ones. Intersection homology, for example, directly produces groups associated to any variety which have almost all the properties of the usual homology groups of a smooth variety. Minimal model theory suggests the possibility of working more indirectly by r

In this second part, we study the Diophantine properties of values of arithmetic Gevrey series of non-zero order at algebraic points. We rely on the fact, proved in the first part, that the minimal differential operator (with polynomial coefficients) which annihilates such a series has no non-trivial singularity outside the origin and infinity. We show how t

Gevrey series are ubiquitous in analysis; any series satisfying some (possibly non-linear) analytic differential equation is Gevrey of some rational order. The present work stems from two observations: 1) the classical Gevrey series, e.g. generalized hypergeometric series with rational parameters, enjoy arithmetic counterparts of the Archimedean Gevrey condi

This paper works out the structure of singular points of p-adic differential equations (i.e. differential modules over the ring of functions analytic in some annulus with external radius 1). Surprisingly results look like in the formal case (differential modules over a one variable power series field) but proofs are much more involved. However, unlike in the

Let H denote a semisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0. We show that the degree of any irreducible representation of H whose character belongs to the center of H^* must divide the dimension of H .

To what extent does the eigenvalue spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a compact Riemannian manifold determine the geometry of the manifold? We give examples of isospectral manifolds with different local geometry including continuous families of isospectral negatively curved manifolds with boundary as well as various pairs of manifolds. The latter i

Let E be a compact set of C of positive logarithmic capacity. Let us suppose that for every polynomial $P\not=id$ we have $P^{-1}(E)\not=E$. Then for all no constant polynomials f and g such that $f^{-1}(E)=g^{-1}(E)$ we have f=g.

The explicit realization of M. Kontsevich's formality on $R^d$ is the main step of the proof of formality theorem on any manifold. We present here a coherent choice of orientations and signs in order to write completely M. Kontsevich's proof for $R^d$, including all the signs appearing in the formality equation.

The "measurability" of the non-minimal coupling is discussed in the context of the effective field theory of gravity. Although there is no obvious motive for excluding a non-minimal scalar coupling from the theory, we conclude that for reasonable values of the coupling constant it makes only a very small correction.

We give a survey of selected topics in noncommutative geometry, with some emphasis on those directly related to physics, including our recent work with Dirk Kreimer on renormalization and the Riemann-Hilbert problem. We discuss at length two issues. The first is the relevance of the paradigm of geometric space, based on spectral considerations, which is cent

We construct a classical field theory action which upon quantization via the functional integral approach, gives rise to a consistent Dirac-string independent quantum field theory. The approach entails a systematic derivation of the correlators of all gauge invariant observables, and also of charged dyonic fields. Manifest SO(2)-duality invariance and Lorent

We consider the dual Yang-Mills theory which shows some kind of confinement at large distances. In the static system of the test color charges an analytic expression for the string tension is derived.

We describe consequences of the chiral anomaly in the theory of quantum wires, the (quantum) Hall effect, and of a four-dimensional cousin of the Hall effect. We explain which aspects of conductance quantization are related to the chiral anomaly. The four-dimensional analogue of the Hall effect involves the axion field, whose time derivative can be interpret

The hypothetical force is calculated in experimental configuration (a sphere above a disk both covered by two metallic layers). A muon collider operating in the TeV energy range can be an ideal s-channel Higgs boson factory. This is especially true for a heavy Higgs boson. The non-perturbative dynamical aspects of such a Higgs boson were recently investigated with large N expansion methods at next to leading order, and reveal the existence of a mass saturation effect. Even at strong

Multiple production of Higgs particles is essential to study Higgs self-couplings at future high-energy colliders. In this paper we calculated the resonance contributions to the production of three lightest neutral supersymmetric Higgs bosons in gluon fusion at LHC. The cross sections due to trilinear Higgs couplings is sizeable but the measurement of the qu

We consider non-perturbative effects at short distances in theories with confinement. The analysis is straightforward within the Abelian models in which the confinement arises on classical level. In all cases considered (compact U(1) in 3D and 4D, dual Abelian Higgs model) there are non-perturbative contributions associated with short distances which are due

Starting from the QCD Hamiltonian in near-light cone coordinates, we study the dynamics of the gluonic zero modes. Euclidean 2+1 dimensional lattice simulations show that the gap at strong coupling vanishes at intermediate coupling. This result opens the possibility to synchronize the continuum limit with the approach to the light cone.

In the perturbative QCD with $N_c\to\infty$ equations for the amplitude of the nucleus-nucleus scattering are derived by the effective field method. The asymptotic form of the solution is discussed. It is argued that in the high-energy limit the total nucleus-nucleus cross-sections become constant and purely geometrical.

Using the recently found hA amplitude, single and double inclusive jet production rates on the nucleus are studied in the perturbative QCD with $N_c\to\infty$. Jet multiplicities are found to grow with $A$ and energy as $A^{2/9}s^Δ$ where $Δ$ is the BFKL intercept. Long range correlations are found to behave as $A^{4/9}s^{2Δ}$ and change from negative to pos

Distortions of bound nucleon space-time structure, measured in deep inelastic scattering off nuclei, are discussed from view-point of a theoretical approach based on the Bethe-Salpeter formalism. It is shown that modification of the structure function $F_2^{\rm N}$ results from relative time dependence in Green functions of bound nucleons. The modification p

The mystery of the cosmological constant is probably the most pressing obstacle to significantly improving the models of elementary particle physics derived from string theory. The problem arises because in the standard framework of low energy physics, there appears to be no natural explanation for vanishing or extreme smallness of the vacuum energy, while o

The status of two on-going studies concerning important aspects of the phenomenology of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) models at TeV colliders is reported. The first study deals with the characteristics of the light Higgs boson spectrum allowed by the (minimal and non-minimal) GMSB framework. Today's most accurate GMSB model generation and

In contrast to its counterpart in a vector theory, the effective action of a chiral gauge theory may have a non-vanishing imaginary part. It consists of the so-called Chern-Simons form, which encodes the anomaly and a gauge invariant piece related to the eta-invariant of some extended Dirac operator. We investigate the imaginary part of the effective action

A consistent Hamiltonian formulation of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR) requires the theory to be invariant under the global SO(3) symmetry group, which acts on orthonormal triads in three-dimensional spacelike hypersurfaces. While much research on the hard problem of in-depth story understanding by computer was performed starting in the 1970s, interest shifted in the 1990s to information extraction and word sense disambiguation. Now that a degree of success has been achieved on these easier problems, I propose it is time to return to in-depth story understanding. In this paper I

In the context of the dynamical mean-field theory of the Hubbard model, we identify microscopically an order parameter for the finite temperature Mott endpoint. We derive a Landau functional of the order parameter. We then use the order parameter theory to elucidate the singular behavior of various physical quantities which are experimentally accessible.

We investigate the low-temperature dynamics of single electron boxes and transistors close to their degeneracy point using renormalization group methods. The equation of state for five-dimensional hard hyperspheres arising as a weighted average of the Percus-Yevick compressibility (3/5) and virial (2/5) equations of state is considered.
