We point out several subtleties arising in brane-world scenarios of cosmological constant cancellation. We show that solutions with curvature singularities are inconsistent, unless the contribution to the effective four-dimentional cosmological constant of the physics that resolves the singularities is fine-tuned. This holds for both flat and curved branes.

We show that a D-brane in a group manifold given by a (twisted) conjugacy class is characterised by a gauge invariant two-form field determined in terms of the matrix of gluing conditions. Using a quantisation argument based on the path integral one obtains the known quantisation condition for the corresponding D-branes. We find no evidence for the existence

We investigate the structure of equations of motion and lagrangian constraints in a general theory of massive spin 2 field interacting with external gravity. We demonstrate how consistency with the flat limit can be achieved in a number of specific spacetimes. One such example is an arbitrary static spacetime though equations of motion in this case may lack

This paper introduces and studies the notion of output-input stability, which represents a variant of the minimum-phase property for general smooth nonlinear control systems. The definition of output-input stability does not rely on a particular choice of coordinates in which the system takes a normal form or on the computation of zero dynamics. In the spiri

We study the questions of the existence and mass of the proposed $d' (IJ^P=00^-)$ dibaryon in the quark-delocalization, color-screening model (QDCSM). The transformation between physical and symmetry bases has been extended to the cases beyond the SU(2) orbital symmetry. Using parameters fixed by baryon properties and $NN$ scattering, we find a mild attr

We present results for the mass spectrum of $c{\bar c}$ mesons simulated on anisotropic lattices where the temporal spacing $a_t$ is only half of the spatial spacing $a_s$. A critical review is presented of the attempts to estimate the Strong Interactions contributions to the parameter $S$ ($L_{10}$ in the QCD Chiral Version). In particular it is discussed why the estimations done for Technicolor are unreliable. $S$ is calculated for heavy doublets of Techniquarks using the Nonrelativistic Quark Model and keeping $v\simeq 0.25$

We analyze the large N supergravity descriptions of the class of type IIB models T-dual to elliptic type IIA brane configurations containing two orientifold 6-planes and up to two NS 5-branes. The T-dual IIB configurations contain N D3-branes in the background of an orientifold 7-plane and, in some models, a Z_2 orbifold and/or D7-branes, which give rise to

Tsallis has proposed a generalisation of the standard entropy, which has since been applied to a variety of physical systems. In the canonical ensemble approach that is mostly used, average energy is given by an unnromalised, or normalised, $q$-expectation value. In a large class of supersymmetric (SUSY) axion model the mass of axino $\axino$ (a fermionic superpartner of the axion) is predicted as $m_{\axino} \lesssim {\cal O}(1)$ keV. It is suggested to map the qubits into solid state NMR spin system collective states instead of the states of the individual spin. Using the VLA, continuum emission is detected at 8.6 GHz from a faint H

We present the aim and the status of the BLEIS project currently under development at SISSA. This project consists in selecting a complete Blazar sample from deep optical data, down to B=24.6, V=24.4 and I=23.7 (80% completness). The optical images are taken from the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS - Wide), a public survey covering ~16 deg2 of the Southern Emisphere

The X-ray sky is not as well known as is sometimes thought. We report on our search of minority populations (Kim & Elvis 1999). One of the most intriguing is that of `blank field sources', i.e. bright ROSAT sources (F(X)>1e-13 erg/cm2/s) with no optical counterpart on the Palomar Sky Survey (to O=21.5) within their 39"(99%) radius error circle. The n

The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) satellite accumulated ~one million seconds of public data between 1994 and 1997 for the BL Lacertae object Markarian 421. This is the second of two papers in which we present the results of spectral and temporal analysis of this EUVE data set. We analyze in the present paper the imaging data by means of power spectrum

Recent surveys have discovered hundreds of low surface brightness galaxies in the local (z < 0.1) Universe. Plots of the surface brightness distribution (the space density of galaxies plotted against central surface brightness) show a flat distribution from the bright-end cutoff of 21.65 through the current observational limit of 25.0 B mag arcsec^{-2}. As n

According to the inflationary scenario, all structure in the Universe can be traced back to quantum fluctuations of the metric and scalar field(s) during inflation. The seeds of this structure can be observed as classical anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background. I briefly review how the transition from the inherent quantum nature of these fluctuation

We present a comprehensive theoretical investigation of the evolutionary properties of intermediate-mass stars. The evolutionary sequences were computed from the Zero Age Main Sequence up to the central He exhaustion and often up to the phases which precede the carbon ignition or to the reignition of the H-shell which marks the beginning of the thermal pulse

We have observed with the BeppoSAX satellite the quiescent counterpart of the Soft Gamma-ray Repeater SGR 1806-20. Observations performed in October 1998 and in March 1999 showed that this pulsar continued its long term spin-down trend at an average rate of ~8 10e-11 s/s while its flux and spectrum remained remarkably constant between the two observations, d

Time-scales of radio emission are studied in PSR J0437-4715 at 327 MHz using almost half a million periods of high quality data from Ooty Radio Telescope. The radio emission in this milli second pulsar occurs on a short (s) time-scale of approximately 0.026 +- 0.001 periods, and on a (l) time-scale that is much longer than the widths of the components of the

We present the analysis of morphological and photometric properties of a sample of isolated spirals with (18) and without (11) an active nucleus, based on near-infrared imaging in the J and K' bands. The aim of this analysis is to find the differential properties that could be directly connected with the phenomenon of nuclear activity. We stress the impo

Recent models of the envelopes of seven massive protostars are used to analyze observations of H3+ infrared absorption and H13CO+ submillimeter emission lines toward these stars, and to constrain the cosmic-ray ionization rate zeta. The H13CO+ gives best-fit values of zeta=(2.6+/- 1.8) x 10^-17 s^-1, in good agreement with diffuse cloud models and with recen

I describe a new technique that we have been using in the past few years to get precise measurements of the frequency separation of the kHz QPOs in some Low-mass X-ray binaries. I show how this technique (that we call "shift-and-add") works, and I present some of the results we obtained using it.

We use data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer to search for harmonics and sidebands of the two simultaneous kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in Sco X-1. We do not detect any of these harmonics or sidebands, with 95% confidence upper limits to their power between ~ 1% and ~ 10% of the power of the upper kHz QPO. The oscillations produced at

The standard Born Oppenheimer theory does not give an accurate description of the wave function near points of level crossing. We give such a description near an isotropic conic crossing, for energies close to the crossing energy. This leads to the study of two coupled second order ordinary differential equations whose solution is described in terms of the g
