A protein model with the pairwise interaction energies varying as local environment changes, i.e., including some kinds of collective effect between the contacts, is proposed. Lattice Monte Carlo simulations on the thermodynamical characteristics and free energy profile show a well-defined two-state behavior and cooperativity of folding for such a model. As

We report an x-ray scattering study of octahedral tilt ordering in the manganite series Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ with x=0.4 and 0.25 and in LaMnO$_3$. The sensitivity to tilt ordering is achieved by tuning the incident x-ray energy to the L$_I$, L$_{II}$ and L$_{III}$ absorption edges of Pr and La, respectively. Models for the source and propagation of cosmic rays are stressed by observations of cosmic rays with energies $E>10^{20}$ eV. We present high resolution H I 21 cm line, 20 cm radio continuum, and CO(1-0) line observations of the luminous infrared galaxy NGC 6670. NGC 6670 consists of two edge-on disk galaxies (NGC 6670E and NGC 6670W) with a projected nuclear separation of ~16 kpc. While there are no optically identified tidal features and the molecular disks are not distorted much

Nearby interstellar clouds with high (|v| >/= 10 km/s) random velocities although easily detected in NaI and CaII lines have hitherto not been detected (in emission or absorption) in the HI 21cm line. We describe here deep Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI absorption observations toward radio sources with small angular separation from bright O and B

As a result of spherical kinematics, temporal evolution of received gamma-ray emission should demonstrate signatures of curvature from the emitting shell. Specifically, the shape of the pulse decay must bear a strict dependence on the degree of curvature of the gamma-ray emitting surface. We compare the spectral evolution of the decay of individual GRB pulse

We exhibit a simple and explicit formula for the metric of an arbitrary static spherically symmetric perfect fluid spacetime. This class of metrics depends on one freely specifiable monotone non-increasing generating function. We also investigate various regularity conditions, and the constraints they impose. Because we never make any assumptions as to the n

We show that for two non-trivial lambda phi ^4 problems (the anharmonic oscillator and the Landau-Ginzburg hierarchical model), improved perturbative series can be obtained by cutting off the large field contributions. The modified series converge to values exponentially close to the exact ones. For lambda larger than some critical value, the method outperfo

In this paper we obtain the following results: (1) Any compact Stein surface with boundary embeds naturally into a symplectic Lefschetz fibration over the 2-sphere. (2) There exists a minimal elliptic fibration over the 2-disk, which is not Stein. (3) The circle bundle over a genus n>1 surface with euler number e=-1 admits at least n+1 mutually non-homeomorp
Field theoretic calculation of renormalized-viscosity, renormalized-resistivity, and energy fluxes of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence
nlin.CDMahendra K. Verma
A self-consistent renormalization (RG) scheme has been applied to nonhelical magnetohydrodynamic turbulence with zero cross helicity. Kolmogorov's 5/3 powerlaw has been shown to be a consistent solution for $d \ge d_c \approx 2.2$. For Kolmogorov's solution, both renormalized viscosity and resistivity are positive for the whole range of parameters. V

We study supersymmetric charged rotating black holes in AdS$_5$, and show that closed timelike curves occur outside the event horizon. Also upon lifting to rotating D3 brane solutions of type IIB supergravity in ten dimensions, closed timelike curves are still present. We believe that these causal anomalies correspond to loss of unitarity in the dual ${\cal
Statistical Mechanics of Canonical-Dissipative Systems and Applications to Swarm Dynamics
cond-mat.stat-mechFrank Schweitzer, Werner Ebeling, Benno Tilch
We develop the theory of canonical-dissipative systems, based on the assumption that both the conservative and the dissipative elements of the dynamics are determined by invariants of motion. In this case, known solutions for conservative systems can be used for an extension of the dynamics, which also includes elements such as the take-up/dissipation of ene

Phenomenology of a radion ($ϕ$) in the Randall-Sundrum scenario is discussed. The radion couples to the trace of energy momentum tensor of the standard model with a strength suppressed only by a new scale ($Λ_ϕ$) which is an order of the electroweak scale. In particular, the effective coupling of a radion to two gluons is enhanced due to the trace anomaly of
Compton Scattering off Relativistic Bound States: Two-Photon Vertices, Ward-Takahashi Identities, Gauge Invariance and Low-Energy Limit
nucl-thMatthias Koll, Ralf Ricken
In a general framework that has been labeled the ``gauging of equations method'', we study the diagrams that contribute to Compton scattering off a relativistic composite system. These contributions can be derived for $N$--particle bound states described by the covariant Bethe--Salpeter equation with a method equivalent to minimal substitution in the

We investigate how strongly and at what scales the Sunyaev- Zel'dovich effect reflects the shifting balance between the two processes that compete for governing the density and the thermodynamic state of the hot intra-cluster medium pervading clusters and groups of galaxies: the hierarchical clustering of the DM; the non-gravitational energy and momentum
The order-disorder character of the (3x3) to (sqrt3 x sqrt3)R30° phase transition of Sn on Ge(111)

Growing attention has been drawn in the past years to the α-phase (1/3 monolayer) of Sn on Ge(111), which undergoes a transition from the low temperature (3x3) phase to the room temperature (\sqrt3 x \sqrt3)R30° one. On the basis of scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments, this transition was claimed to be the manifestation of a surface charge densit

The heavy quark potential and particularly the one proposed by Richardson to incorporate both asymptotic freedom and linear confinement is analyzed in terms of a generalized Borel Transform recently proposed. We were able to obtain, in the range of physical interest, an approximate analytical expression for the potential in coordinate space valid even for in
Enhancement of superconductive critical temperatures in almost empty or full bands in two dimensions: possible relevance to beta-HfNCl, C60 and MgB2
cond-mat.supr-conMahito Kohmoto, Iksoo Chang, Jacques Friedel
We examine possibility of enhancement of superconductive critical temperature in two-dimensions. The weak coupling BCS theory is applied, especially when the Fermi level is near the edges of the electronic bands. The attractive interaction depends on ${\bf k}$ due to screening. The density of states(DOS) does not have a peak near the bottom of the band, but

The first quantum correction to the finite temperature partition function for a self-interacting massless scalar field on a $D-$dimensional flat manifold with $p$ non-commutative extra dimensions is evaluated by means of dimensional regularization, suplemented with zeta-function techniques. It is found that the zeta function associated with the effective one

The investigation of Zn substitution in MgB2 polycrystalline samples shows that about 0.1 Zn can be substituted in the structure of Mg deficient samples while it can not be substituted in stoichiometric MgB2. As a result of the isovalent Zn substitution into the Mg position of Mg deficient samples the a and c lattice constants increase by about 0.17% and 0.2

Generalizations in many directions of the contraction procedure for Lie algebras introduced by E.J.Saletan are proposed. Products of arbitrary nature, not necessarily Lie brackets, are considered on sections of finite-dimensional vector bundles. Saletan contractions of such infinite-dimensional algebras are obtained via a generalization of the Nijenhuis tens
