Creating vortex rings and three-dimensional skyrmions in Bose-Einstein condensates
cond-mat.stat-mechJ. Ruostekoski, J. R. Anglin
We propose a method of generating a vortex ring in a Bose-Einstein condensate by means of electromagnetically-induced atomic transitions. Some remnant population of atoms in a second internal state remains within the toroidal trap formed by the mean field repulsion of the vortex ring. This population can be removed, or it can be made to flow around the torus
Low-energy renormalization of the electron dispersion of high-T$_c$ superconductors
cond-mat.supr-conR. Zeyher, A. Greco
High-resolution ARPES studies in cuprates have detected low-energy changes in the dispersion and absorption of quasi-particles at low temperatures, in particular, in the superconducting state. Based on a new 1/N expansion of the t-J-Holstein model, which includes collective antiferromagnetic fluctuations already in leading order, we argue that the observed l

We calculated the Coulomb drag contribution to the resistivity and the transresistivity for a double layer system, in which the passive layer is a Wigner crystal pinned by impurities, and the active one is a metal. Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of interacting electrons in solids often use Slater-Jastrow trial wave functions. The Jastrow function takes into account correlations between pairs of electrons. In simulations of solids, it is common to use a Jastrow function which is both homogeneous and isotropic. The use of a homogeneous and isotropic Jastrow factor is qu

Magnetization studies on superconducting MgB$_2$ - lower and upper critical fields and critical current density

Magnetization studies have been carried out on superconducting MgB$_2$ (T$_c$=37K) in the temperature range of 2-50K and in magnetic field up to 5 Tesla. From these measurements, values of the lower critical field H$_c1$(0), upper critical field H$_c2$(0) at zero K are estimated to be ~300 Oe and ~12.5 Tesla, respectively, which yield a value of ~26 for the

We investigate the highly frustrated spin and orbital superexchange interactions in cubic vanadates. A fossil bone from the archaeological site Malu Rosu Giurgiu, in Romania has been analyzed by accelerator mass spectrometry to estimate its age by determining its $^{14}$C content. The radiocarbon age of the bone is in agreement with the date obtained by the method for age determination, based on fluorine content. This is the first radiocarbon dating for the

Very narrow spatial bright solitons in (1+1)D and (2+1)D versions of cubic-quintic and full saturable models are studied, starting from the full system of the Maxwell's equations, rather than from the paraxial (NLS) approximation. For the solitons with both TE and TM polarizations, it is shown that there always exists a finite minimum width, and they cea

We study the properties of discrete breathers, also known as intrinsic localized modes, in the one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova lattice of oscillators subject to damping and external force. The system is studied in the whole range of values of the coupling parameter, from C=0 (uncoupled limit) up to values close to the continuum limit (forced and damped sin

Under some hypotheses (symmetry, confluence), we enumerate all quadratically presented algebras, generated by creation and destruction operators, in which number operators exist. We show that these are algebras of bosons, fermions, their immediate generalizations that we call pseudo-bosons and pseudo-fermions, and also matrix algebras, in the finitely genera

In this paper, we extend the generalization of Drinfeld realization of quantum affine algebras to quantum affine superalgebras with its Drinfeld comultiplication and its Hopf algebra structure, which depends on a function $g(z)$ satisfying the relation: $g(z)=g(z^{-1})^{-1}.$ In particular, we present the Drinfeld realization of $U_q(\hat {\frak osp}(1,2))$

We develop the theory of n-stacks (or more generally Segal n-stacks which are $\infty$-stacks such that the morphisms are invertible above degree n). This is done by systematically using the theory of closed model categories (cmc). Our main results are: a definition of n-stacks in terms of limits, which should be perfectly general for stacks of any type of o

We prove that if a finitely presented group acts properly discontinuously, cocompactly and by isometries on a simply connected Riemannian manifold, then the Dehn function of the group and the corresponding filling function of the manifold are equivalent, in a sense described below.

Motivated by the correspondence between the vertex and IRF models in statistical mechanics, we define and study a notion of vertex-IRF transformation for dynamical twists that generalizes a usual gauge transformation. We use vertex-IRF transformations to quantize all completely degenerate dynamical r-matrices on finite-dimensional Lie algebras.

In this note we prove that the moduli space of rank $2n$ symplectic instanton bundles on ${\PP^{2n+1}}$, defined from the well known monad condition, is affine. This result was not known even in the case $n=1$, where the real instanton bundles correspond to self dual Yang Mills $Sp(1)$-connections over the 4-dimensional sphere. The result is proved as a cons

Denote by MI(k) the moduli space of k-instanton bundles E of rank 2 on $\PP^3=\PP(V)$ and by $Z_k(E)$ the scheme of k-jumping lines. We prove that $[E]\in MI(k)$ is not stable for the action of SL(V) if $Z_k(E)\neq\emptyset$. Moreover $\dim Sym(E)\ge 1$ if $length Z_k(E)\ge 2$. We prove also that E is special if and only if $Z_k(E)$ is a smooth conic. The ac

We study a general transition operator, generated by a random walk on a graph $X$; in particular we give necessary and sufficient condition on the matrix coefficient (1-step transition probablilities) to be a bounded operator from $l^\infty(X)$ into itself. Moreover we characterize compact operators and we relate this property to the behaviour of the associa

We study the endomorphism ring $End(J(C))$ of the complex jacobian $J(C)$ of a curve $y^p=f(x)$ where $p$ is an odd prime and $f(x)$ is a polynomial with complex coefficiens of degree $n>4$ and without multiple roots. Assume that all the coefficients of $f$ lie in a (sub)field $K$ and the Galois group of $f$ over $K$ is either the full symmetric group $S_n$

We construct four series of modular categories from the two-variable Kauffman polynomial, without use of the representation theory of quantum groups at roots of unity. The specializations of this polynomial corresponding to quantum groups of types B, C and D produce series of pre-modular categories. One of them turns out to be modular and three others satisf

New string models in D=4 space-time extended by tensor central charge coordinates $z_{mn}$ are constructed. We use the $z_{mn}$ coordinates to generate string tension using a minimally extended string action linear in $dz^{mn}$. It is shown that the presence of $z_{mn}$ lifts the light-like character of the tensionless string worldsheet and the degeneracy of

We discuss a simple cosmological model derived from M-theory. Three assumptions lead naturally to a pre-big bang scenario: (a) 11-dimensional supergravity describes the low-energy world; (b) non-gravitational fields live on a three-dimensional brane; and (c) asymptotically past triviality.

Some time ago, it was found that the never-ending oscillatory chaotic behaviour discovered by Belinsky, Khalatnikov and Lifshitz (BKL) for the generic solution of the vacuum Einstein equations in the vicinity of a spacelike ("cosmological") singularity disappears in spacetime dimensions $D= d+1>10$. Recently, a study of the generalization of the BKL

We review many quantum aspects of torsion theory and discuss the possibility of the space-time torsion to exist and to be detected. The paper starts, in Chapter 2, with an introduction to the classical gravity with torsion, that includes also interaction of torsion with matter fields. In Chapter 3, the renormalization of quantum theory of matter fields and r

Dixon's multipoles for a system of N relativistic positive-energy scalar particles are evaluated in the rest-frame instant form of dynamics. The Wigner hyperplanes (intrinsic rest frame of the isolated system) turn out to be the natural framework for describing multipole kinematics. In particular, concepts like the {\it barycentric tensor of inertia} can
