We consider a reduced model of four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory with a mass term. This matrix model has two classical solutions, two-dimensional fuzzy sphere and two-dimensional fuzzy torus. These classical solutions are constructed by embedding them into three or four dimensional flat space. They exist for finite size matrices, that is, the number of the

We show that the scale of the inflationary potential may be the electroweak scale or even lower, while still generating an acceptable spectrum of primordial density perturbations. Thermal effects readily lead to the initial conditions necessary for low scale inflation to occur, and even the moduli problem can be evaded if there is such an inflationary period

The time behaviour of microwaves undergoing partial reflection by photonic barriers was measured in the time and in the frequency domain. The flux-dependent amplitude of broadband noise variability in X-ray binaries and active galaxies
astro-phPhilip Uttley, Ian M. McHardy
Standard shot-noise models, which seek to explain the broadband noise variability that characterises the X-ray lightcurves of X-ray binaries and active galaxies, predict that the power spectrum of the X-ray lightcurve is stationary (i.e. constant amplitude and shape) on short time-scales. We show that the broadband noise power spectra of the black hole candi

Potential approximations to $δ'$: an inverse Klauder phenomenon with norm-resolvent convergence

We show that there is a family Schroedinger operators with scaled potentials which approximates the $δ'$-interaction Hamiltonian in the norm-resolvent sense. This approximation, based on a formal scheme proposed by Cheon and Shigehara, has nontrivial convergence properties which are in several respects opposite to those of the Klauder phenomenon.

Energy cascade rates and Kolmogorov's constant for nonhelical steady magnetohydrodynamic turbulence have been calculated by solving the flux equations to the first order in perturbation. Frequency distributions of local muon densities in high-energy extensive air-showers (EAS) are presented as signature of the primary cosmic ray energy spectrum in the knee region. Together with the gross shower variables like shower core position, angle of incidence, and the shower sizes, the KASCADE experiment is able to measure local muon densities for two
Application of a relativistic accretion disc model to X-ray spectra of LMC X-1 and GRO J1655-40
astro-phMarek Gierlinski, Andrzej Maciolek-Niedzwiecki, Ken Ebisawa
We present a general relativistic accretion disc model and its application to the soft-state X-ray spectra of black hole binaries. The model assumes a flat, optically thick disc around a rotating Kerr black hole. The disc locally radiates away the dissipated energy as a blackbody. Special and general relativistic effects influencing photons emitted by the di

We consider the thermal emission of photons and electron-positron pairs from the bare quark surface of a hot strange star. The radiation of high-energy (> 20 MeV) equilibrium photons prevails at the surface temperature T_S > 5 x 10^{10} K, while below this temperature, 8 x 10^8 < T_S < 5 x 10^{10} K, emission of electron-positron pairs created by the Coulomb

It is well known that the mass function for_halos_ in CDM cosmology is a relatively steep power law for low masses, possibly too steep to be consistent with observations. But how steep is the_galaxy_ mass function? We have analyzed the stellar and gas mass functions of the first massive luminous objects formed in a ΛCDM universe, as calculated in the numeric
ASCA Temperature Maps of Three Clusters of Galaxies Abell 1060, AWM7, and the Centaurus Cluster
astro-phT. Furusho, N. Y. Yamasaki, T. Ohashi, R. Shibata
We present two-dimensional temperature maps of three bright clusters of galaxies Abell 1060, AWM7, and the Centaurus cluster, based on multi-pointing observations with the ASCA GIS. The temperatures are derived from hardness ratios by taking into account the XRT response. For the Centaurus cluster, we subtracted the central cool component using the previous
A Fast Technique for the Creation of Large-Scale High-Resolution IRAS (HIRES) Beam-matched Images
astro-phC. R. Kerton, P. G. Martin
HIRES processing provides a significant improvement in both resolution and image quality over previous IRAS image products, but the characteristics of the HIRES beam make accurate comparisons between the various IRAS bandpasses and between HIRES data and data at other wavelengths non-trivial. We present a new, fast technique for the construction of HIRES bea

We analyze the role of RR fluxes in orientifold backgrounds from the point of view of K-theory, and demonstrate some physical implications of describing these fluxes in K-theory rather than cohomology. In particular, we show that certain fractional shifts in RR charge quantization due to discrete RR fluxes are naturally explained in K-theory. We also show th
Centrality dependence of multiplicity, transverse energy, and elliptic flow from hydrodynamics
hep-phP. F. Kolb, U. Heinz, P. Huovinen, K. J. Eskola
The centrality dependence of the charged multiplicity, transverse energy, and elliptic flow coefficient is studied in a hydrodynamic model, using a variety of different initializations which model the initial energy or entropy production process as a hard or soft process, respectively. While the charged multiplicity depends strongly on the chosen initializat
VLT observations of the peculiar globular cluster NGC 6712, II: luminosity and mass functions
astro-phG. Andreuzzi, G. De Marchi, F. Ferraro, F. Paresce
We have carried out extensive VLT-FORS1 observations covering a fair fraction of the intermediate metallicity globular cluster NGC 6712 in the V and R bands. We derive accurate colour-magnitude diagrammes (CMD) and luminosity functions (LFs) of the cluster main sequence (MS) for four overlapping fields extending from the centre of the cluster out to a radius

A search for steady TeV point sources anywhere in the northern sky has been made with data from the Milagrito air-shower-particle detector. Over 3 x 10**9 events collected from 1997 February to 1998 May have been used in this study. No statistically significant excess above the background from the isotropic flux of cosmic rays was found for any direction of
Can extra dimensions accessible to the SM explain the recent measurement of anomalous magnetic moment of the muon?
hep-phK. Agashe, N. G. Deshpande, G. -H. Wu
We investigate whether models with flat extra dimensions in which SM fields propagate can give a significant contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (MMM). In models with only SM gauge and Higgs fields in the bulk, the contribution to the MMM from Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations of gauge bosons is very small. This is due to the constraint on

In this note, we study a matrix-regularized version of non-commutative U(1) Chern-Simons theory proposed recently by Polychronakos. We determine a complete minimal basis of exact wavefunctions for the theory at arbitrary level k and rank N and show that these are in one-to-one correspondence with Laughlin-type wavefunctions describing excitations of a quantu
