Influence of confinement on the orientational phase transitions in the lamellar phase of a block copolymer melt under shear flow
cond-mat.softA. N. Morozov, A. V. Zvelindovsky, J. G. E. M. Fraaije
In this work we incorporate some real-system effects into the theory of orientational phase transitions under shear flow (M. E. Cates and S. T. Milner, Phys. Rev. Lett. v.62, p.1856 (1989) and G. H. Fredrickson, J. Rheol. v.38, p.1045 (1994)). In particular, we study the influence of the shear-cell boundaries on the orientation of the lamellar phase. We pred
Sex-Oriented stable matchings of the Marriage Problem with correlated and incomplete information
cond-mat.dis-nnG. Caldarelli, Andrea Capocci, Paolo Laureti
In the Stable Marriage Problem two sets of agents must be paired according to mutual preferences, which may happen to conflict. We present two generalizations of its sex-oriented version, aiming to take into account correlations between the preferences of agents and costly information. Their effects are investigated both numerically and analytically.

We study the role of active and passive investors in an investment market with uncertainties. Active investors concentrate on a single or a few stocks with a given probability of determining the quality of them. Passive investors spread their investment uniformly, resembling buying the market index. In this toy market stocks are introduced as good and bad. I

We discuss physical and mathematical aspects of the over-damped motion of a Brownian particle in fluctuating potentials. It is shown that such a system can be described quantitatively by fluctuating rates if the potential fluctuations are slow compared to relaxation within the minima of the potential, and if the position of the minima does not fluctuate. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is a popular growth method, which has been successfully used for fabricating thin films. Compared to continuous deposition (like molecular beam epitaxy) the pulse intensity can be used as an additional parameter for tuning the growth behavior, so that under certain circumstances PLD improves layer-by-layer growth. This class of O surfaces is shown to include and generalize classical surfaces such as isothermic, constant mean curvature, minimal, `linear' Weingarten, Guichard and Petot surfaces and surfaces of constant Gaussian curvature. It is demonstrated that the construction of a Backlund transformation for O sur

We investigate high-Reynolds number turbulence in dilute polymer solutions. We show the existence of a critical value of the Reynolds number which separates two different regimes. In the first regime, below the transition, the influence of the polymer molecules on the flow is negligible and they can be regarded as passively embedded in the flow. This case ad

The Dirac operator d+delta on the Hodge complex of a Riemannian manifold is regarded as an annihilation operator A. On a weighted space L_mu^2 Omega, [A,A*] acts as multiplication by a positive constant on excited states if and only if the logarithm of the measure density of mu satisfies a pair of equations. The equations are equivalent to the existence of a

Non-holonomic constraints, both in the Lagragian and Hamiltonian formalism, are discussed from the geometrical viewpoint of implicit differential equations. A precise statement of both problems is presented remarking the similarities and differences with other classical problems with constraints. In our discussion, apart from a constraint submanifold, a fiel

Although there are infinitely many knots with superbridge index n for every even integer n>2, there are only finitely many knots with superbridge index 3.

Let (R,m) be a local ring with prime ideals p and q such that p+q is an m-primary ideal. If R is regular and contains a field, and dim(R/p)+dim(R/q)=dim(R), we prove that p^{(r)}\cap q^{(n)}\subseteq m^{m+n} for all positive integers r and s. This is proved using a generalization of Serre's Intersection Theorem which we apply to a hypersurface R/fR. The

Theorem: If W is a smooth complex projective variety with h^1 (O-script_W) = 0, then a sufficiently ample smooth divisor X on W cannot be a hyperplane section of a Calabi-Yau variety, unless W is itself a Calabi-Yau. Corollary: A smooth hypersurface of degree d in P^n (n >= 2) is a hyperplane section of a Calabi-Yau variety iff n+2 <= d <= 2n+2. The method i

The aim of this paper is to prove the following result. For any commutative formal group ${\frak F}(x\otimes 1,1\otimes x),$ which is considered as a formal group over $H_\mathbb{Q},$ there exists a homomorphism to a formal group of the form ${\frak c}+x\otimes 1+1\otimes x,$ where $\frak c\in H_\mathbb{Q}{\mathop{\hat{\otimes}} \limits_{R_\mathbb{Q}}}H_\mat

Some differential equations are considered in the context of Synthetic Differential Geometry. Here, this means that not only nilpotent infinitesimals, but also the formation of function spaces, is exploited. In particular, we utilize distribution spaces in our study of wave and heat equations.

I give a survey about my work on combinatorial and probabilistic aspects of free probability theory. In particular, I present the combinatorial description of freeness in terms of free cumulants and I give some ideas of the main results of my joint work with Philippe Biane on a stochastic integration theory for free Brownian motion.

The random-cluster model is a dependent percolation model that has applications in the study of Ising and Potts models. In this paper, several new results are obtained for the random-cluster model on nonamenable graphs with cluster parameter $q\geq 1$. Among these, the main ones are the absence of percolation for the free random-cluster measure at the critic

A quantitative prediction of Conformal Field Theory (CFT), which relates the second moment of the energy-density correlator away from criticality to the value of the central charge, is verified in the sine-Gordon model. By exploiting the boson-fermion duality of two-dimensional field theories, this result also allows to show the validity of the prediction in

We effectively sew two vertices with ghosts in order to obtain a third, composite vertex in the most general case of cycling transformations. In order to do this, we separate the vertices into two parts: a bosonic oscillator part and a ghost oscillator part and write them as canonical forms.

Finite-dimensional representations of Onsager's algebra are characterized by the zeros of truncation polynomials. The Z_N-chiral Potts quantum chain hamiltonians (of which the Ising chain hamiltonian is the N=2 case) are the main known interesting representations of Onsager's algebra and the corresponding polynomials have been found by Baxter and Alb

We consider the enhancement of SL(2,R) to Virasoro algebra in a system of N particles on AdS2. We restrict our discussion to the case of non-interacting particles, and argue that they must be treated as fermions. We find operators L_n whose commutators on the ground state, |vac>, satisfy relations that are reminisent of c=1 Virasoro algebra, provided N \geq

We argue that the thermodynamics of conformal field theories with AdS duals exhibits a remarkable universality. At strong coupling, a Cardy-Verlinde entropy formula holds even when R-charges or bulk supergravity scalars are turned on. In such a setting, the Casimir entropy can be identified with a generalized C-function that changes monotonically with temper

We study the Euler-Lagrange cohomology and explore the symplectic or multisymplectic geometry and their preserving properties in classical mechanism and classical field theory in Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism in each case respectively. By virtue of the Euler-Lagrange cohomology that is nontrivial in the configuration space, we show that the symplectic

Trying to interpret recent matrix model results (hep-th/0101011) we discuss computation of classical free energy of exact dilatonic 2-d black hole from the effective action of string theory. The euclidean space-time action evaluated on the black hole background is divergent due to linear dilaton vacuum contribution, and its finite part depends on a subtracti

At very high energies, the high parton densities (characterized by a semi-hard saturation scale Λ_s) ensure that parton distributions can be described by a classical effective field theory with remarkable properties analogous to those of spin glass systems. This color glass condensate (CGC) of gluons also provides the initial conditions for multi-particle pr

For the first time the experiments ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL have presented preliminary results for fermion-pair production in e+e- collisions on the full data set above the Z pole. A combined analysis of the Bhabha scattering measurements is performed to search for effects of contact interactions. In the case of two axial-vector (AA) currents the best fit

A simple algorithm is presented to decompose any 1-loop amplitude for scattering processes of the class 2 fermions -> 4 fermions into a fixed number of gauge-invariant form factors. The structure of the amplitude is simpler than in the conventional approaches and its numerical evaluation is made faster. The algorithm can be efficiently applied also to amplit

We present the QCD analysis of D-parameter distribution in near-to-planar 3-jet e+e- annihilation events. We derive the all-order resummed perturbative prediction and the leading power suppressed non-perturbative corrections both to the mean value and the distribution. Here non-perturbative corrections are larger than in 2-jet shape observables, so that high
