Numerical simulations predict that a large number of baryons reside in intergalactic space at temperatures between 10^5-10^7 K. Highly-ionized metals, such as O VII and O VIII, are good tracers of this ``warm-hot intergalactic medium'', or WHIM. For collisionally-ionized gas, the ionization fraction of each ion peaks at some particular temperature (`

Binary black hole coalescences emit gravitational waves that will be measurable by the space-based detector it LISA to large redshifts. An immediate difficulty with this idea is that LISA
A Radiation-Hydrodynamical Model for Supermassive Black Hole-to-Bulge Mass Relation and Quasar Formation

The spectrum of the fermionic operators depending on external fields is an important object in Quantum Field Theory. We discuss deep inelastic scattering at low $x$ as a critical phenomenon in 2+1 space-time dimensions. QCD (SU2) near the light cone becomes a critical theory in the limit of $\lim x \to 0$ with a correlation mass $m(x) \propto x^{ν/2}$. We conjecture that the perturbative dipole wave function of the virtual photon in the region $1/Q<x_{\bot}<1/m$ obeys corr
c,b quark masses and f_D_(s), f_B_(s) decay constants from pseudoscalar sum rules in full QCD to order alpha_s^2
hep-phStephan Narison
The pseudoscalar sum rules of the heavy-light quark systems are used for extracting simultaneously the c,b quark masses and the decay constants f_D_(s),f_B_(s) of the D_(s),B_(s) mesons. To order alpha_s^2, one obtains the running quark masses: m_c(m_c)=(1.10 \pm 0.04) GeV, m_b(m_b)=(4.05\pm 0.06) GeV, the perturbative pole masses: M_c=(1.46\pm 0.04) GeV, M_

We derive the next-to-leading order splitting kernels for the scale evolution of fragmentation functions for transversely polarized quarks into transversely polarized hadrons.

This paper presents the first numerical solution to the non-linear evolution equation for diffractive dissociation processes in deep inelastic scattering. It is shown that the solution depends on one scaling variable $τ= Q^2/Q^{D 2}_s(x,x_0)$, where $Q^D_s(x,x_0)$ is the saturation scale for the diffraction processes. The dependence of the saturation scale $
Photoproduction of charmed vector mesons, $γ+N\to {\cal B}_c +\overline{D^*}$, with ${\cal B}_c=Λ_c$ or $Σ_c$

The energy and the angular dependence of the associative vector charmed ${D^*}$-meson photoproduction, $γ+N\to {\cal B}_c+ \overline{D^*}$, with ${\cal B}_c=Λ_c$ or $Σ_c$, has been predicted in framework of pseudoscalar D-meson exchange model. The behavior of the cross section is driven by phenomenological form factors, which can be parametrized in terms of

A fairly non-technical introduction to and survey of supersymmetry phenomenology with pedagogical emphasis, including exercises. Suitable for both theorists and experimentalists. The manuscript appeared as a Springer-Verlag monograph in physics. The body of the manuscript is provided here with the publisher`s permission.

We analyse what happens with two merging constituent monopoles for the SU(3) caloron. Identified through degenerate eigenvalues (the singularities or defects of the abelian projection) of the Polyakov loop, it follows that there are defects that are not directly related to the actual constituent monopoles.

We use null hypersurface techniques in a new approach to calculate the retarded waveform from a binary black hole merger in the close approximation. The process of removing ingoing radiation from the system leads to two notable features in the shape of the close approximation waveform for a head-on collision of black holes: (i) an initial quasinormal ringup

The paper presents a data-driven approach to information extraction (viewed as template filling) using the structured language model (SLM) as a statistical parser. The task of template filling is cast as constrained parsing using the SLM. The model is automatically trained from a set of sentences annotated with frame/slot labels and spans. Training proceeds

The paper presents a study on the portability of statistical syntactic knowledge in the framework of the structured language model (SLM). We investigate the impact of porting SLM statistics from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) to the Air Travel Information System (ATIS) domain. We compare this approach to applying the Microsoft rule-based parser (NLPwin) for t

We study the effects of magnetoelastic couplings on pyrochlore antiferromagnets. We employ Landau theory, extending an investigation begun by Yamashita and Ueda for the case of S=1, and semiclassical analyses to argue that such couplings generate bond order via a spin--Peierls transition. This is followed by, or concurrent with, a transition into one of seve
Theoretical investigation on the possibility of preparing left-handed materials in metallic magnetic granular composites

We investigate the possibility of preparing left-handed materials in metallic magnetic granular composites. Based on the effective medium approximation, we show that by incorporating metallic magnetic nanoparticles into an appropriate insulating matrix and controlling the directions of magnetization of metallic magnetic components and their volume fraction,
Getting More from Pushing Less: Negative Specific Heat and Conductivity in Non-equilibrium Steady States

For students familiar with equilibrium statistical mechanics, the notion of a positive specific heat, being intimately related to the idea of stability, is both intuitively reasonable and mathematically provable. However, for system in non-equilibrium stationary states, coupled to more than one energy reservoir (e.g., thermal bath), negative specific heat is
