In the heavy quark limit inclusive production rate of a heavy meson can be factorized, in which the nonperturbative effect related to the heavy meson can be characterized by matrix elements defined in the heavy quark effective theory. Using this factorization, predictions for the full spin density matrix of a spin-1 and spin-2 meson can be obtained and they

A brief review of the modern QCD theory of diffractive DIS is given. The recent progress has been remarkably rapid, all the principal predictions from the color dipole approach to diffraction - the $(Q^2+m_V^2)$ scaling, the pattern of SCHNC, shrinkage of the diffraction cone in hard diffractive DIS, the strong impact of longitudinal gluons in inclusive $J/Ψ

It is the aim of this talk to review our understanding of the high-energy limit of QCD, focussing, in particular, on recent theoretical developments. After a brief introduction, I will recall why the true high-energy limit of QCD scattering processes is genuinly non-perturbative and why it has so far not been possible to apply lattice methods to this type of

We present new results of the quenched simulations of the reduced D=4 supersymmetric Yang - Mills quantum mechanics for larger gauge groups SU(N), 2<N<9. The model, studied at finite temperature, reveals existence of the two distinct regions which may be precursors of a black hole and the elementary D0 branes phases of M-theory conjectured in the literature.

In this talk we discuss finite-volume computations of two-body hadronic decays below the inelastic threshold (e.g. $K\toππ$ decays). The D0 meson can decay to the wrong sign K+pi- state either through a doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay or via mixing to the D0bar state followed by the Cabibbo favoured decay D0bar -> K+ pi-. We measure the rate of wrong sign decays relative to the Cabibbo favoured decay to (0.383 +- 0.044 +- 0.022)% and give our sensitivity to a mixing signal.

The paper investigates the computational problem of predicting RNA secondary structures. The general belief is that allowing pseudoknots makes the problem hard. Existing polynomial-time algorithms are heuristic algorithms with no performance guarantee and can only handle limited types of pseudoknots. In this paper we initiate the study of predicting RNA seco

The degree of ionisation of a two-dimensional electron-hole plasma is calculated in the low-density (Boltzmann) limit. The electron-hole interaction is considered for all states: optically active and inactive, bound and unbound. The theory is applied to exciton/free-carrier plasma in GaN-based quantum wells at room temperature.

In smoothed analysis, we measure the maximum over inputs of the expected performance of an algorithm under small random perturbations of that input. We measure this performance in terms of both the input size and the magnitude of the

In this paper we provide a detailed numerical study of the influence of thermal effects on the original picture of AD baryogenesis. These effects are found to modify the results greatly in some cases. We estimate the baryon/entropy ratio and provide numerical results on the typical behavior of the charge as a function of the strength of the potential and oth

A bit string commitment protocol securely commits $N$ classical bits in such a way that the recipient can extract only $M<N$ bits of information about the string. Classical reasoning might suggest that bit string commitment implies bit commitment and hence, given the Mayers-Lo-Chau theorem, that non-relativistic quantum bit string commitment is impossible. N

Low-mass X-ray binaries containing weakly magnetized neutron stars may be divided into two classes, Z and atoll sources, based in large part upon the patterns which they trace in plots of two X-ray colors. In this paper, we examine color-color diagrams of nine atoll sources and five Z sources using data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. The five-year spa

Recent theoretical developments to calculate cross sections of hadronic objects in the high energy limit are summarised and experimental attempts to establish the need for new QCD effects connected with a resummation of small hadron momentum fractions x are reviewed. The relation between small-$x$ parton dynamics and the phenomenon of diffraction is briefly

In two seminal papers Kontsevich used a construction called_graph homology_ as a bridge between certain infinite dimensional Lie algebras and various topological objects, including moduli spaces of curves, the group of outer automorphisms of a free group, and invariants of odd dimensional manifolds. In this paper, we show that Kontsevich's graph complexe

We study the influence of the matter content of extragalactic jets on their morphology, dynamics and emission properties. For this purpose we consider jets of extremely different compositions including pure leptonic and baryonic plasmas. Our work is based on two-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of the long-term evolution of powerful extragal

We present Chandra observations of RXJ1347.5-1145, the most X-ray luminous cluster of galaxies known. We report the discovery of a region of relatively hot, bright X-ray emission, located approximately 20 arcsec to the southeast of the main X-ray peak, at a position consistent with the region of enhanced Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect reported by Komatsu et al. (2

We present a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element |Vcb| using a 10.2 fb^{-1} data sample recorded at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e^+e^- storage ring. By extrapolating the differential decay width of the \bar{B}^0 --> D^{*+}e^-\barν decay to the kinematic limit at which the D^{*+} is at rest

We discuss fluxes of RR and NSNS background fields in type II string compactifications on non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds together with their dual brane description which involves bound states of branes. Simultaneously turning on RR and NSNS 2-form fluxes in an 1/2 supersymmetric way can be geometrically described in M-theory by a SL(2,Z) family of metrics

We achieve degeneracy in a mixture of the two lowest hyperfine states of $^6$Li by direct evaporation in a CO$_2$ laser trap, yielding the first all-optically produced degenerate Fermi gas. More than $10^5$ atoms are confined at temperatures below $4 μ$K at full trap depth, where the Fermi temperature for each state is $8 μ$K. This degenerate two-component m

The first realization of instabilities in the shear flow between two superfluids is examined. The interface separating the A and B phases of superfluid He-3 is magnetically stabilized. With uniform rotation we create a state with discontinuous tangential velocities at the interface, supported by the difference in quantized vorticity in the two phases. This s

A significant branch of classical cryptography deals with the problems which arise when mistrustful parties need to generate, process or exchange information. As Kilian showed a while ago, mistrustful classical cryptography can be founded on a single protocol, oblivious transfer, from which general secure multi-party computations can be built. The scope of m

The Tango bundle T over P^5 is proved to be the pull-back of the twisted Cayley bundle C(1) via a map f : P^5 --> Q_5 existing only in characteristic 2. The Frobenius morphism F factorizes via such f. Using f the cohomology of T is computed in terms of F^*(C), Sym^2(C), C and the tensor product of S by C, while these are computed by applying Borel-Bott-Weil

In this paper, we consider the diffractive photoproduction of quark-antiquark pairs in peripheral heavy ion collisions. The color field of the nuclei is treated within the Colored Glass Condensate model. The cross-section turns out to be very sensitive to the value of the saturation scale.

Abundance of rich clusters in local universe is currently believed to provide the most robust normalization of power spectrum at a scale of 10 Mpc. This normalization depends very sensitively on the calibration between virial mass M and temperature T, which is usually taken from simulations. Uncertainties in the modelling, such as gas cooling and heating, ca

The proof of a recent result by Guido and Longo establishing the equivalence of the KMS-condition with complete $β$-boundedness is shortcut and generalized in such a way that a covariant version of the theorem is obtained.

We propose a correspondence between the physics of certain small charge black holes in AdS_k x S^l and large charge black holes in AdS_l x S^k. The curvature singularities of these solutions arise, following Myers and Tafjord, from a condensate of giant gravitons. When the number of condensed giants N_g is much greater than the number of background branes N,

The notion of operator amenability was introduced by Z.-J. Ruan in 1995. He showed that a locally compact group G is amenable if and only if its Fourier algebra A(G) is operator amenable. In this paper, we investigate the operator amenability of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B(G) and of the reduced Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B_r(G). The natural conjecture is
