There is good support for the embedding of the Standard Model fermions in the chiral 16 representation of SO(10). Such an embedding is provided by the realistic free fermionic heterotic-string models. In this talk we demonstrate the existence of solutions with 3 generations and SO(10) observable gauge group, in the case of compactification on a torus-fibred

In the BMN approach to N=4 SYM a large class of correlators of interest are expressible in terms of expectation values of traces of words in a zero-dimensional Gaussian complex matrix model. We develop a loop-equation based, analytic strategy for evaluating such expectation values to any order in the genus expansion. We reproduce the expectation values which

A tubular D3-brane with electromagnetic flux is considered. It is verified that the quantized electric and magnetic charges are the F-string and D-string charges of the brane, respectively. The D3-brane with parallel electric and magnetic fields collapses to the bound state of strings. A D3-brane with nonzero Poynting vector can be viewed as expanded FD stri

We show that an observable fraction of the measured elliptic flow may originate in classical gluon fields at the initial stage of a peripheral high-energy nuclear collision. This mechanism complements the contribution of late stage mechanisms, such as those described by hydrodynamics, to the observed elliptic flow.
Multiplicity Distribution studies of $e^+e^-$-annihilation at 50-61.4 GeV and 172-189 GeV by Two Stage Model hadronization
hep-phE. S. Kokoulina
The multiplicity distributions at high energy $e^+e^-$ annihilation are described well within the Two Stage Model in the region from 14 to 189 GeV. Energy dependence of parameters of this model gives the dynamic picture of the parton stage and the stage of hadronization. It is shown that oscillations in sign of the ratio of factorial cumulant moments over fa

We report on dispersive and finite energy sum rule analyses of the electroweak penguin matrix elements < (pi pi) | Q_{7,8} | K > in the chiral limit. We motivate that the start-up of the B factories has opened a new precision flavour physics era, with an important effect on model building. We discuss quantum corrections of new physics to the triple coupling of the lightest CP-even Higgs boson in the Two Higgs Doublet Model (THDM) and also in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). In the THDM, quartic contributions of the mass of heavy particles in the loop can appear, which are not absorbed by renormalization of the Higgs boson mass

The nearest-neighbor mass-spacing distribution of the meson and baryon spectrum (up to 2.5 GeV) is described by the Wigner surmise corresponding to the statistics of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrix theory. This can be viewed as a manifestation of quantum chaos in hadrons.

This paper summarises the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV performed by the OPAL Collaboration at LEP. The consistency of the data with the background hypothesis and various Higgs boson mass hypotheses is examined. No indication of a signal is found in the data and a lower bound of 112.7GeV

We present first analytical results on transport properties of many-mode waveguides with rough surfaces having long-range correlations. We show that propagation of waves through such waveguides reveals a quite unexpected phenomena of a complete transparency for a subset of propagating modes. These modes do not interact with each other and effectively can be

This paper addresses the controversy between Mayers, Lo and Chau on one side, and Yuen on the opposite side, on whether there exist or not unconditionally secure protocols. For such purpose, a complete classification of all possible bit commitment protocols is given, including all possible cheating attacks. For the simplest class of protocols (non-aborting a
The quantum bit commitment: a finite open system approach for a complete classification of protocols
quant-phGiacomo Mauro D'Ariano
Mayers, Lo and Chau argued that all quantum bit commitment protocols are insecure, because there is no way to prevent an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) cheating attack. However, Yuen presented some protocols which challenged the previous impossibility argument. Up to now, it is still debated whether there exist or not unconditionally secure protocols. In this

Quantum algorithms are conventionally formulated for implementation on a single system of qubits amenable to projective measurements. However, in expectation value quantum computation, such as nuclear magnetic resonance realizations, the computer consists of an ensemble of identical qubit-systems amenable only to expectation value measurements. The prevalent

We present a formalism that represents pure states, mixtures and generalized states as functionals on an algebra containing the observables of the system. Along these states, there are other functionals that decay exponentially at all times and therefore can be used to describe resonance phenomena.

We obtain the precise form of two Gamow functionals, representing the exponentially decaying part of a quantum resonance and its mirror image that grows exponentially, as a linear, positive and continuous functional on an algebra containing observables. These functionals do not admit normalization and, with an appropiate choice of the algebra, are time rever

We study the stability of unitary quantum dynamics of composite systems (for example: central system + environment) with respect to weak interaction between the two parts. Unified theoretical formalism is applied to study different physical situations: (i) coherence of a forward evolution as measured by purity of the reduced density matrix, (ii) stability of

We use entropy-energy arguments to assess the limitations on the running time and on the system size, as measured in qubits, of noisy macroscopic circuit-based quantum computers.

The primary resource for quantum computation is Hilbert-space dimension. Whereas Hilbert space itself is an abstract construction, the number of dimensions available to a system is a physical quantity that requires physical resources. Avoiding a demand for an exponential amount of these resources places a fundamental constraint on the systems that are suitab

In previous papers we have considered mutual simulation of n-partite pair-interaction Hamiltonians. We have focussed on the running time overhead of general simulations, while considering the required number of time steps only for special cases (decoupling and time-reversal). These two complexity measures differ significantly. Here we derive lower bounds on
Subthreshold dynamics of the neural membrane potential driven by stochastic synaptic input
physics.bio-phUlrich Hillenbrand
In the cerebral cortex, neurons are subject to a continuous bombardment of synaptic inputs originating from the network's background activity. This leads to ongoing, mostly subthreshold membrane dynamics that depends on the statistics of the background activity and of the synapses made on a neuron. Subthreshold membrane polarization is, in turn, a potent
Electromagnetic structure of the deuteron: review of recent theoretical and experimental results
nucl-thFranz Gross
This talk reviews recent theoretical and experimental results for elastic electron deuteron scattering (yielding the deuteron form factors), threshold electrodisintegration ($e+d\to e'+p+n$ where the mass of the final $np$ pair, $W$, is only a few MeV above the threshold value of $m_p+m_n$), and high energy deuteron photodisintegration ($γ+d\to p+n$). Th
Final State Interaction within the Bethe-Salpeter Approach in Charge Exchange pD->n(pp) process

The exclusive charge exchange reaction pD->n(pp) at intermediate and high energies is studied within the Bethe-Salpeter formalism. The final state interaction in the detected at zero-near excitation energy pp-pair is described by the 1S0 component of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude. Results of numerical calculations of polarization observables and differential

Incoherent photoproduction of pions on the deuteron in the Delta(1232) resonance region is studied, where besides the impulse approximation complete two-body rescattering in the nucleon-nucleon and pion-nucleon final state subsystems is included.
Three-Body Analysis of Incoherent Photoproduction of $η$ Mesons on the Deuteron near Threshold
nucl-thA. Fix, H. Arenhoevel
The importance of three-body dynamics in the $ηnp$ system in elastic and inelastic $η$-deuteron scattering as well as coherent and incoherent $η$ photoproduction on the deuteron in the energy region from threshold up to 30 MeV above has been investigated. It is shown that a restriction to first order rescattering with respect to the $NN$- and $ηN$-final stat

Much of the energy of the nuclei colliding at RHIC or SPS is converted into final state hadronic particles. About a quarter of this energy is in baryons and antibaryons. There are nearly 10 strange quark pairs per central rapidity participant. Do we really understand the hadronic particle yields? Do we need to introduce post-Fermi-model ideas such as chemica
Charge Particle Multiplicity and Transverse Energy Measurements in Au-Au collisions in PHENIX at RHIC
nucl-exA. Bazilevsky
We present results on charged particle and transverse energy densities measured at mid-rapidity in Au-Au collisions at sqrt(s_{NN})=200 GeV. The mean transverse energy per charged particle is derived. The results are presented as a function of centrality, which is defined by the number of participating nucleons, and compared to results obtained in Au-Au coll
