Theoretical study of finite temperature spectroscopy in van der Waals clusters. II Time-dependent absorption spectra
physics.chem-phF. Calvo, F. Spiegelman, D. J. Wales
Using approximate partition functions and a master equation approach, we investigate the statistical relaxation toward equilibrium in selected CaAr$_n$ clusters. The Gaussian theory of absorption (previous article) is employed to calculate the average photoabsorption intensity associated with the 4s^2-> 4s^14p^1 transition of calcium as a function of time du

The influence of temperature on the absorption spectra is estimated using the quantum superposition method for a variety of cluster sizes in the range 6<=n<=146. In quantum field theory, physicists routinely use "normal ordering" of operators, which just amounts to shuffling all creation operators to the left. Potentially confusing, then, is the occurrence in the literature of normal-ordered functions, sometimes called "Wick transforms". We aim to introduce the reader to some basic results and ideas a

According to the theory of relativity, the relativistic Coulomb's force between an electron pair is composed of two parts, the main part is repulsive, while the rest part can be attractive in certain situations. Thus the relativistic attraction of an electron pair provides an insight into the mechanism of superconductivity. In superconductor, there are,

The maximality of Abelian subgroups play a role in various parts of group theory. In order to enhance spin injection efficiency from ferromagnetic (FM) metal into a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), we introduce another FM metal and two tunnel barriers (I) between them to investigate the current polarization in such ballistic FM/I/FM/I/2DEG junction. Our treatment is based on the free-electron scattering theory. It is found that due to

When a sinusoidal (ac) field is applied to a suspension containing nonlinear dielectric particles, the electrical response will generally consist of ac fields at frequencies of the higher-order harmonics. The situation is further complicated by an intrinsic dielectric dispersion which often occurs due to the surface conductivity or inhomogeneous structure of

We present results from Monte Carlo simulations of the two- and three-dimensional gauge glass at low temperature using the parallel tempering Monte Carlo method. Our results in two dimensions strongly support the transition being at T_c=0. A finite-size scaling analysis, which works well only for the larger sizes and lower temperatures, gives the stiffness e

The detailed morphology of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the central kiloparsec of galaxies is controlled by pressure and gravitation. The combination of these forces shapes both circumnuclear star formation and the growth of the central, supermassive black hole. We present visible and near-infrared Hubble Space Telescope images and color maps of 123 near

Lyman alpha absorber correlations contain information about the underlying density distribution associated with a particular class of absorbers. As such, they provide an opportunity to independently measure the "bias" of the Lyman alpha forest, i.e. the relationship between HI column density and underlying dark matter density. In these proceedings we
Size estimates for intervening C IV absorbers from high resolution spectroscopy of APM 0827+5255

A new analysis of Keck/HIRES observations of the broad absorption line QSO APM 0827+5255 indicates that a number of intervening C IV absorbers give rise to absorption lines for which the observed optical depths for 1548, 1550 A doublet components are not in the expected 2:1 ratio. To compensate for the effect, a local adjustment of the zero-level is required
Circumnuclear Dust in Nearby Active and Inactive Galaxies. II. Bars, Nuclear Spirals, and the Fueling of Active Galactic Nuclei

(Abridged) We present a detailed study of the relation between circumnuclear dust morphology, host galaxy properties, and nuclear activity in nearby galaxies. We use our sample of 123 nearby galaxies with visible--near-infrared colormaps from the Hubble Space Telescope to create well-matched, "paired" samples of 28 active and 28 inactive galaxies, as

Determining the structure of galaxy clusters is essential for an understanding of large scale structure in the universe, and may hold important clues to the identity and nature of dark matter particles. Moreover, the core dark matter distribution may offer insight into the structure formation process. Unfortunately, cluster cores also tend to be the site of
X-ray Spectroscopy and Variability of AGN Detected in the 2 Ms Chandra Deep Field-North Survey

We investigate the nature of the faint X-ray source population through X-ray spectroscopy and variability analyses of 136 AGN detected in the 2 Ms Chandra Deep Field-North survey with > 200 background-subtracted 0.5-8.0 keV counts [F(0.5-8.0 keV)=(1.4-200)e-15 erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}]. Our preliminary spectral analyses yield median spectral parameters of Gamma=1.

We present optical spectra and redshift measurements for 178 flat-spectrum objects from the Parkes quarter-Jansky flat-spectrum sample. These spectra were obtained in order to compile a complete sample of quasars for use in a study of quasar evolution. We present a composite optical spectrum made from the subset of 109 quasars that have flux densities in the

We have performed fully 3D simulations of the collapse of molecular cloud cores which obey the logatropic equation of state. By following the collapse of these cores from states of near hydrodynamic equilibrium, we are able to produce accretion histories which closely resemble those of observed cores. The accretion proceeds in four distinct stages: an initia

The HII regions Sh 217 and Sh 219 are textbook examples of a Stromgren sphere surrounded by an annular photodissociation region (PDR). The annular PDR is observed in both the 21 cm atomic hydrogen emission and the dust (PAH) emission near 8 micron (MSX Survey). An ultracompact radio continuum source is observed in the direction of the annular PDR, in both Sh

We propose that a radiative cycle operates in atoms (ions) located in a rarefied gas in the vicinity of a hot star. Besides spontaneous transitions the cycle includes a stimulated transition in one very weak intermediate channel. This radiative "bottle neck" creates a population inversion, which for an appropriate column density results in amplificat

We use Chandra, HST and VLA observations of M87 to investigate the physics of X-ray emission from AGN jets. We find that X-ray hotspots in the M87 jet occur primarily in regions with hard optical-to-X-ray spectra and lower than average polarization. Particle injection appears to be required both continuously in the jet sheath as well as locally at X-ray hots

We present results from the largest numerical simulation of star formation to resolve the fragmentation process down to the opacity limit. The simulation follows the collapse and fragmentation of a large-scale turbulent molecular cloud to form a stellar cluster and, simultaneously, the formation of circumstellar discs and binary stars. This large range of sc

We investigate the possibility of an intrinsic Baldwin Effect (i.e.,nonlinear emission-line response to continuum variations) in the broad H-beta emission line of the active galaxy NGC 5548 using cross-correlation techniques to remove light travel-time effects from the data. We find a nonlinear relationship between the H-beta emission line and continuum flux

The goal of my lecture is to present the introduction into the hydrodynamical version of the Grad-Shafranov equation. Although not so well-known as the full MHD one, it allows us to clarify the nontrivial structure of the Grad-Shafranov approach as well as to discuss the simplest version of the 3+1-split language -- the most convenient one for the descriptio
