We detected a correlation between optical and giant radio pulse emission from the Crab pulsar. The Hyades open cluster presents a unique laboratory for planet formation and stellar pollution studies because all of the stars have essentially the same age and were born from the same cloud of gas. Furthermore, with an age of roughly 650 Myr most of the intermediate and low mass stars are on the main sequence. Given these assumptions, the accretion of met

Starbursts from strong compression of galactic molecular clouds due to the high pressure of the intracluster medium
astro-phKenji Bekki, Warrick J. Couch
We demonstrate that the high pressure of the hot intracluster medium (ICM) can trigger the collapse of molecular clouds in a spiral galaxy, leading to a burst of star formation in the clouds. Our hydrodynamical simulations show that the high gaseous (ram pressure and static thermal) pressure of the ICM strongly compresses a self-gravitating gas cloud within

There are two major alternatives for violating the (usual) Lorentz invariance at large (Planckian) energies or momenta - either not all inertial frames (in the Planck regime) are equivalent (e.g., there is an effectively preferred frame) or the transformations from one frame to another are (non-linearly) deformed (``doubly special relativity''). Calorons in the confined phase for SU(n) gauge theory, having a non-trivial Polyakov loop, "dissolve" in n monopole constituents for large enough instanton scale parameters. We discuss recent results for these caloron solutions and their fermion zero-modes, as well as the implications for lattice studies and comment on the possible influence of the c
Duality of gauge field singularities and the structure of the flux tube in Abelian-projected SU(2) gauge theory and the dual Abelian Higgs model
hep-latY. Koma, M. Koma, E. -M. Ilgenfritz, T. Suzuki
The structure of the flux-tube profile in Abelian-projected (AP) SU(2) gauge theory in the maximally Abelian gauge is studied. The connection between the AP flux tube and the classical flux-tube solution of the U(1) dual Abelian Higgs (DAH) model is clarified in terms of the path-integral duality transformation. This connection suggests that the electric pho
Setting upper limits on the strength of periodic gravitational waves using the first science data from the GEO600 and LIGO detectors
gr-qcThe LIGO Scientific Collaboration, B. Abbott
Data collected by the GEO600 and LIGO interferometric gravitational wave detectors during their first observational science run were searched for continuous gravitational waves from the pulsar J1939+2134 at twice its rotation frequency. Two independent analysis methods were used and are demonstrated in this paper: a frequency domain method and a time domain

A particle in the vicinity of a Schwarzschild black hole is known to trace a geodesic of the Schwarzschild background, to a first approximation. If the interaction of the particle with its own field (scalar, electromagnetic or gravitational) is taken into account, the path is no longer a background geodesic and the self-force that the particle experiences ne

We describe the role of correlation measurements between the LIGO interferometer in Livingston, LA, and the ALLEGRO resonant bar detector in Baton Rouge, LA, in searches for a stochastic background of gravitational waves. Such measurements provide a valuable complement to correlations between interferometers at the two LIGO sites, since they are sensitive in

If the situation of quantum gravity nowadays is nearly the same as that of the quantum mechanics in it's early time of Bohr and Sommerfeld, then a first step study of the quantum gravity from Sommerfeld's quantum condition of action might be helpful. In this short paper the spectra of Schwarzschild black hole(SBH) in quasi-classical approach of quant

The Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations for a massive spinning test particle in plane gravitational waves are analysed and explicit solutions constructed in terms of solutions of certain linear ordinary differential equations. For harmonic waves this system reduces to a single equation of Mathieu-Hill type. In this case spinning particles may exhibit parame

As language data and associated technologies proliferate and as the language resources community expands, it is becoming increasingly difficult to locate and reuse existing resources. Are there any lexical resources for such-and-such a language? What tool works with transcripts in this particular format? What is a good format to use for linguistic data of th

We use density-functional theoretical methods to examine the recent prediction, based on a mean-field solution of the Zener model, that diamond doped by Mn (with spin S=5/2) would be a dilute magnetic semiconductor that remains ferromagnetic well above room temperature. Our findings suggest this to be unlikely, for four reasons: (1) substitutional Mn in diam
Order N Monte Carlo Algorithm for Fermion Systems Coupled with Fluctuating Adiabatical Fields
cond-mat.str-elNobuo Furukawa, Yukitoshi Motome
An improved algorithm is proposed for Monte Carlo methods to study fermion systems interacting with adiabatical fields. To obtain a weight for each Monte Carlo sample with a fixed configuration of adiabatical fields, a series expansion using Chebyshev polynomials is applied. By introducing truncations of matrix operations in a systematic and controlled way,

Pulse propagation in nonlinear arrays continues to be of interest because it provides a possible mechanism for energy transfer with little dispersion. Here we show that common measures of pulse dispersion might be misleading; in strongly anharmonic systems they tend to reflect a succession of extremely narrow pulses traveling at decreasing velocities rather
Inhomogeneous CuO_{6} Tilt Distribution and Charge/Spin Correlations in La_{2-x-y}Nd_{y}Sr_{x}CuO$_{4} around commensurate hole concentration
cond-mat.str-elA. Gozar, B. S. Dennis, T. Siegrist, Y. Horibe
Phononic and magnetic Raman scattering are studied in La$_{2-x-y}$Nd$_{y}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with three doping concentrations: x ~ 1/8, y = 0; x ~ 1/8, y = 0.4; and x = 0.01, y = 0. We observe strong disorder in the tilt pattern of the CuO_{6} octahedra in both the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases which persist down to 10 K and are coupled to bond disorder

The critical phase transition in ferromagnetic ultrathin Fe/W(110) films has been studied using the magnetic ac susceptibility. A statistically objective, unconstrained fitting of the susceptibility is used to extract values for the critical exponent (gamma), the critical temperature Tc, the critical amplitude (chi_o) and the range of temperature that exhibi

We present a numerical study of the order-parameter fluctuations for Ising spin glasses in three and four dimensions at very low temperatures and without an external field. Accurate measurements of two previously introduced parameters, A and G, show that the order parameter is not self-averaging, consistent with a zero-temperature thermal exponent value θ
Superconductivity and spin-glass like behavior in system with Pd sheet sandwiched between graphene sheets
cond-mat.supr-conMasatsugu Suzuki, Itsuko S. Suzuki, Jürgen Walter
Pd-metal graphite (Pd-MG) has a layered structure, where each Pd sheet is sandwiched between adjacent graphene sheets. DC magnetization and AC magnetic susceptibility of Pd-MG have been measured using a SQUID magnetometer. Pd-MG undergoes a superconducting transition at $T_{c}$ ($= 3.63 \pm 0.04$ K). The superconductivity occurs in Pd sheets. The relaxation
