Modeling the event horizon of a black hole by a fuzzy sphere it is shown that in the classical limit, for large astrophysical black-holes, the event horizon looks locally like a non-commutative plane with non-commutative parameter dictated by the Planck length. Some suggestions in the literature concerning black hole mass spectra are used to derive a formula

Within the theoretical framework we apply, a suggested origin for single spin asymmetries is the presence of gauge links in transverse momentum dependent distribution functions. Recently we found new gauge link structures in a number of hard processes. These structures need to be considered in the evolution of parton distribution functions and for establishi

It is found that the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle of θ_{atm} is determined to be \tanθ_{atm}=Im(B)/Im(C) for B=M_{ν_eν_μ} and C=M_{ν_eν_τ}, where M_{ij} is the ij element of M^\dagger_νM_νwith M_νas a complex symmetric neutrino mass matrix in the (ν_e, ν_μ, ν_τ)-basis. Another mixing angle, θ_{13}, defined as U_{e3} = \sinθ_{13}e^{-iδ} is subject to the

Using semi-analytical models of galaxy formation, the origin of boxy and disky elliptical galaxies is investigated. We find that the simple scenario, motivated by N-body simulations, in which the isophotal shape is only dependent on the mass ratio of the last major merger, is not able to reproduce the observation that the fraction of boxy and disky elliptica

Basic techniques to prove the unconditional security of quantum cryptography are described. They are applied to a quantum key distribution protocol proposed by Bennett and Brassard in 1984. The proof considers a practical variation on the protocol in which the channel is noisy and photons may be lost during the transmission. The initial coding into the chann

We propose and analyse simple deterministic algorithms that can be used to construct machines that have primitive learning capabilities. We demonstrate that locally connected networks of these machines can be used to perform blind classification on an event-by-event basis, without storing the information of the individual events. We also demonstrate that pro

We propose an experiential formula for the calculation of the energy eigenvalues of a particle moving in a one-dimension finite-deep square well potential after some physical considerations. This formula shows a simple relation between the energy eigenvalues and the potential papameters, and can be used to estimate the energy eigenvalues in a very simple way

We describe a simple and efficient setup to generate and characterize femtosecond quadrature-entangled pulses. Quantum correlations equivalent to about 2.5 dB squeezing are efficiently and easily reached using the non-degenerate parametric amplification of femtosecond pulses through a single-pass in a thin (0.1 mm) potassium niobate crystal. We calculate resonances in three-body systems with attractive Coulomb potentials by solving the homogeneous Faddeev-Merkuriev integral equations for complex energies. The equations are solved by using the Coulomb-Sturmian separable expansion approach. This approach provides an exact treatment of the threshold behavior of the three-body Coulombic systems. We

From analysis of experimental data on nuclear rotation, it is found that the so-called rigid-body value of the nuclear moment of inertia and the nuclear-radius values associated with the moment of inertia as functions of the number of nucleons change their behavior at the number of neutrons $N = 98$. This phenomenon is confirmed by experimental data on the i

The PHENIX experiment has measured direct photons in $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV Au+Au collisions and p+p collisions. The fraction of photons due to direct production in Au+Au collisions is shown as a function of $p_T$ and centrality. This measurement is compared with expectation from pQCD calculations. Other possible sources of direct photons are discussed.

We study open spin chains based on rational sl(N) and sl(M|N) R-matrices. We classify the solutions of the reflection equations, for both the soliton-preserving and soliton-non-preserving cases. We then write the Bethe equations for these open spin chains.

Octonions are introduced through some spin representations. The groups $G_2$, $F_4$ and the $E$ series appear in a natural manner; one way to understand octonions is as the "second coming" of the reals, but with the spinors instead of vectors. Some physical applications in $M$- and $F$-theory as putative "theories of everything" are suggested

We consider open spin chains based on osp(m|2n) Yangians. We solve the reflection equations for some classes of reflection matrices, including the diagonal ones. Having then integrable open spin chains, we write the analytical Bethe Ansatz equations. More details and references can be found in [1,2].

Such functions, when in $H^1$, are known to concentrate a fixed $L^2$-mass (the mass of the ground state) at the point of blowup. Blowup solutions from initial data that is only in $L^2$ are known to concentrate at least a small amount of m

The aim of this paper is to extend the notion of pseudo harmonic morphism (introduced by Loubeau \cite {Lo}) to the case when the source manifold is an admissible Riemannian polyhedron. We define these maps to be harmonic in the sense of Eells-Fuglede \cite {EF} and pseudo-horizontally weakly conformal in our sense (see Section 3). We characterize them by me

The principal result of the work was implementation and test of a method for interpolating 3D points by regular parametric curves and their fast a

We report on the discovery of a large, room temperature magnetoresistance (MR) effect in polyfluorene sandwich devices in weak magnetic fields. We characterize this effect and discuss its dependence on voltage, temperature, film thickness, electrode materials, and (unintentional) impurity concentration. We usually observed negative MR, but positive MR can al

For the Schrodinger equation at fixed energy with a potential supported in a bounded domain we give formulas and equations for finding scattering data from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map with nonzero background potential. For the case of zero background potential these results were obtained in [R.G.Novikov, Multidimensional inverse spectral problem for the equ

We report a systematic study of high magnetic field specific heat and resistivity in single crystals of CeCoIn_5 for the field oriented in the basal plane (H//ab) of this tetragonal heavy fermion superconductor. We observe a divergent electronic specific heat as well as an enhanced A coefficient of the T^{2} law in resistivity at the lowest temperatures, as

We report experimental and numerical results on the growth of a super stable heap (SSH). Such a regime appears for flows in a thin channel and for high flow rate : the flow occurs atop a nearly static heap whose angle is stabilized by the flowing layer at its top and the side wall friction. The growth of the static heap is investigated in this paper. A theor

We have introduced a new perturbative approach for $t-J-V$ model where Hubbard operators are treated as fundamental objects. Using our vertices and propagators we have developed a controllable large-N expansion to calculate different correlation functions. We have investigated charge density-density response and the phase diagram of the model. The charge cor

We investigate through extensive molecular dynamics simulations the fragmentation process of two-dimensional Lennard-Jones systems. After thermalization, the fragmentation is initiated by a sudden increment to the radial component of the particles' velocities. We study the effect of temperature of the thermalized system as well as the influence of the im

We examine the dependence of a thermodynamic potential of a fluid on the geometry of its container. If motion invariance, continuity, and additivity of the potential are fulfilled, only four morphometric measures are needed to describe fully the influence of an arbitrarily shaped container on the fluid. These three constraints can be understood as a more pre

If metal surfaces are exposed to sufficiently oxygen-rich environments, oxides start to form. Important steps in this process are the dissociative adsorption of oxygen at the surface, the incorporation of O atoms into the surface, the formation of a thin oxidic overlayer and the growth of the once formed oxide film. For the oxidation process of late transiti

We discuss similarities and differencies between systems of many interacting players maximizing their individual payoffs and particles minimizing their interaction energy. We analyze long-run behavior of stochastic dynamics of many interacting agents in spatial and adaptive population games. We review results concerning the effect of the number of players an

We present simulation results addressing the dynamics of a colloidal system with attractive interactions close to gelation. Our interaction also has a soft, long range repulsive barrier which suppresses liquid-gas type phase separation at long wavelengths. The new results presented here lend further weight to an intriguing picture emerging from our previous

Coherent Rashba spin precession along interacting multi-mode quantum channels is investigated, revisiting the theory of coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids. We identify susceptibilities as the key-parameters to govern exponents and Rashba precession lengths. In semiconducting quantum wires spins of different transport channels are found to {\em dephase} in th

Various unconventional isotope effects have been reported in high-temperature superconducting copper oxides which are beyond the scheme of BCS theory. Their origin is investigated within polaron theory which leads to a renormalization of the single particle energies and introduces a level shift here. It is found that the exponential squeezing of the second n

We report a new scheme to create weakly bound Cs$_2$ molecules from an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The method is based on switching the magnetic field to a narrow Feshbach resonance and yields a high atom-molecule conversion efficiency of more than 30%, a factor of three higher than obtained with conventional magnetic-field ramps. The Cs$_2$ molecules a

We use the discrete phenomenological model to study theoretically the phase diagrams in antiferroelectric liquid crystals (AFLCs) as a function of optical purity and temperature. Recent experiments have shown that in some systems the number of phases is reduced if the optical purity is extremely high. In some materials the SmC$_{A}^{\star}$ phase is the only
