Electrons bound to shallow donors in GaAs have orbital energy levels analogous to those of the hydrogen atom. The polarization selection rules for optical transitions between the states analogous to the 1s and 2p states of hydrogen in a magnetic field are verified using Terahertz (THz) radiation from the UCSB Free Electron Laser. When Einstein formulated his special relativity, he developed his dynamics for point particles. Of course, many valiant efforts have been made to extend his relativity to rigid bodies, but this subject is forgotten in history. This is largely because of the emergence of quantum mechanics with wave-particle duality. Instead of Lorentz-boosting rigid bodies, w

For an atom in an externally driven cavity, we show that special initial states lead to near-disentangled atom-field evolution, and superpositions of these can lead to near maximally-entangled states. Somewhat counterintutively, we find that (moderate) spontaneous emission in this system actually leads to a transient increase in entanglement beyond the stead

We demonstrate that there is a fundamental limit to the sensitivity of phase-based detection of atoms with light for a given maximum level of allowable spontaneous emission. This is a generalisation of previous results for two-level and three-level atoms. The limit is due to an upper bound on the phase shift that can be imparted on a laser beam for a given e

By means of the idea of measurements on the crossed space-time nonlocal observables, we extend the mechanism for the two-way quantum teleportation to the chain teleportation among N spatially separated spin-1/2 systems. Allometric scaling is one of the most pervasive laws in biology. Its origin, however, is still a matter of dispute. Recent studies have established that maximum metabolic rate scales with an exponent larger than that found for basal metabolism. This unpredicted result sets a challenge that can decide which of the concurrent hypotheses is the correct theory.
Probabilistic forecasting of temperature: comments on the Bayesian Model Averaging approach

A specific implementation of Bayesian model averaging has recently been suggested as a method for the calibration of ensemble temperature forecasts. We consider the well-known family ALC(D) of description logics with a concrete domain, and provide first results on a framework obtained by augmenting ALC(D) atemporal roles and aspatial concrete domain with temporal roles and a spatial concrete domain.

Error-correcting codes and related combinatorial constructs play an important role in several recent (and old) results in computational complexity theory. In this paper we survey results on locally-testable and locally-decodable error-correcting codes, and their applications to complexity theory and to cryptography. Locally decodable codes are error-correcti

We investigate the minimal field strength in precessional magnetization switching using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in under-critically damped systems. It is shown that precessional switching occurs when localized trajectories in phase space become unlocalized upon application of field pulses. By studying the evolution of the phase space, we obtain

We review the field theory approach to percolation processes. Specifically, we focus on the so-called simple and general epidemic processes that display continuous non-equilibrium active to absorbing state phase transitions whose asymptotic features are governed respectively by the directed (DP) and dynamic isotropic percolation (dIP) universality classes. We have studied the shock-induced phase transition from fullerite to a dense amorphous carbon phase by tight-binding molecular dynamics. For increasing hydrostatic pressures P, the C60-cages are found to polymerise at P<10 GPa, to break at P~40 GPa and to slowly collapse further at P>60 GPa. By contrast, in the presence of additional shear stresses, the cage

Directed spiral percolation (DSP), percolation under both directional and rotational constraints, is studied on the triangular lattice in two dimensions (2D). The results are compared with that of the 2D square lattice. Clusters generated in this model are generally rarefied and have chiral dangling ends on both the square and triangular lattices. It is foun

Nb/Cu superconducting superlattices have been fabricated by dc magnetron sputtering. This system shows a vortex glass transition with critical exponents similar to high temperatures superconductors exponents. The transition dymensionality is governed by the superconducting coupling regime. The vortex glass transition shows a pure two dimensional behavior in

Critical properties of hulls of directed spiral percolation (DSP) clusters are studied on the square and triangular lattices in two dimensions (2D). The hull fractal dimension ($d_H$) and some of the critical exponents associated with different moments of the hull size distribution function of the anisotropic DSP clusters are reported here. The values of $d_

We have measured the pressure sensitivity of Tc in fluorinated HgBa2Ca2Cu3O(8+d) (Hg-1223) ceramic samples with different F contents, applying pressures up to 30 GPa. We obtained that Tc increases with increasing pressure, reaching different maximum values, depending on the F doping level, and decreases for a further increase of pressure. A new high Tc recor
