We construct a generic mass model of a disk galaxy by combining the usual two mass components, an exponential thin stellar disk and a dark halo for which we alternatively assume one of the two most common mass distributions. We construct its generic rotation curve, with two free parameters linked to its shape and one to its amplitude, namely the halo charact

We present preliminary results from a coronagraphic survey of young nearby Sun-like stars using the Palomar and Keck adaptive optics systems. We have targeted 251 solar analogs (F5-K5) at 20-160 pc from the Sun, spanning the 3-3000 Myr age range. The youngest (<500 Myr) 100 of these have been imaged with deeper exposures to search for sub-stellar companions.

We investigate the full U(3)$\otimes$U(3) chiral symmetry restoration, at finite temperature and density, on the basis of the three flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with the anomaly term given by the 't Hooft interaction. We implement a temperature (density) dependence of the anomaly coefficient motivated by lattice results for the topological susceptibil

We study phase transitions and the behavior of kaons in hot and dense matter, giving special attention to the role of strange quarks. At T=0, it is found that the fraction of the strange valence quarks affects the energy per particle of the system, without changing the nature of the phase transition, and, on the other side, it has meaningful effects on the b

We present a dynamical model of heavy quark evolution in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) based on the Fokker-Planck equation. We then apply this model to the case of central ultra-relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions performed at RHIC and estimate the component of $J/ψ$ production (integrated and differential) stemming from c-$\bar{c}$ pairs that are initial

Different methods to extract the polarized parton densities from the world polarized DIS data are considered. The higher twist corrections $h^N(x)/Q^2$ to the spin dependent proton and neutron $g_1$ structure functions are found to be non-negligible and important in the QCD analysis of the present experimental data. Their role in determining the polarized pa

Roles of instantons in strangeness hadron physics are discussed. After introducing general features of instantons, hadron spectroscopy under the influence of instanton-quark effective interactions is discussed. Emphases are on the H dibaryon, spin-orbit splittings of P-wave baryons and baryon-baryon interactions and spectrum of the pentaquarks.

We construct and apply to beta decays a truly neutral local quantum field that is entirely based upon momentum space Majorana spinors. We make the observation that theory with momentum space Majorana spinors of real C parities is equivalent to Dirac's theory. For imaginary C parities, the neutrino mass can drop from the single beta decay trace and reappe

COMPASS is a new fixed target experiment presently in operation at CERN. It has the goal to investigate hadron structure and hadron spectroscopy by using either muon or hadron beams. From measurements of various hadron asymmetries in polarized muon - nucleon scattering it will be possible to determine the contribution of the gluons to the nucleon spin. Main

The Belle experiment has measured branching fractions and CP asymmetries for the charmless decays B0->pi+pi- and B0->rho+-pi-+. From these measurements, constraints upon the CKM angle phi_2 can be obtained. These constraints indicate that phi_2 is around 100 degrees.

We report on measurements of event-by-event charge fluctuations in $π^{+}\rp$ and $\rK^{+}\rp$ collisions at 250 GeV/$c$. The dependence of these fluctuations on the size of the rapidity windows are presented for the first time in the full phase space domain. The corrections for the influence of global charge conservation and leading-particle stopping are te

Based on a sample of 5.8X 10^7 J/psi events taken with the BESII detector, the branching fractions of J/psi--> 2(pi+pi-)eta and J/psi-->3(pi+pi-)eta are measured for the first time to be (2.26+-0.08+-0.27)X10^{-3} and (7.24+-0.96+-1.11)X10^{-4}, respectively.
Automatic Mirror Alignment for VIRGO: First experimental demonstration of the Anderson technique on a large-scale interferometer
gr-qcA. Freise
The French-Italian interferometric gravitational wave detector VIRGO is currently being commissioned. Its principal instrument is a Michelson laser interferometer with 3 km long optical cavities in the arms and a power-recycling mirror. The interferometer resides in an ultra-high vacuum system and the mirrors are suspended from multistage pendulums for seism

The asymptotic behaviour of the components of the Weyl tensor and of the energy-momentum tensor in the Penrose limit is determined. In both cases a peeling-off property is found. Examples of different types of matter are provided. The expansion and shear of the congruence of null geodesics along which the Penrose limit is taken are determined. Finally, the a

Quantum energy inequalities (QEIs) were established by Flanagan for the massless scalar field on two-dimensional Lorentzian spacetimes globally conformal to Minkowski space. We extend his result to all two-dimensional globally hyperbolic Lorentzian spacetimes and use it to show that flat spacetime QEIs give a good approximation to the curved spacetime result
