The mean pulsation period of ZZ Ceti stars increases with decreasing effective temperature as we traverse from the blue to the red edge of the instability strip. This well-established correlation between the mean period and spectroscopic temperature suggests that the mean period could be utilized as a tool to measure the relative temperature of the star inde

We address the maximum attainable rate of fingerprinting codes under the marking assumption, studying lower and upper bounds on the value of the rate for various sizes of the attacker coalition. Image processing researchers commonly assert that "median filtering is better than linear filtering for removing noise in the presence of edges." Using a straightforward large-$n$ decision-theory framework, this folk-theorem is seen to be false in general. We calculate certain string correlation functions, originally introduced as order parameters in integer spin chains, for the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg chain at zero temperature and in the thermodynamic limit. For small distances, we obtain exact results from Bethe Ansatz and exact diagonalization, whereas in the large-distance limit, field-theoretical argument
Ultrafast Critical Dynamics of Ferroelectric Phase Transition in Pb$_{1-x}$Ge$_{x}$Te

Transient responses of the electronic excitation and coherent soft phonon are investigated both above and below the ferroelectric phase transition temperature T$_{c}$ in Pb$_{1-x}$Ge$_{x}$Te by using an optical pump-probe technique. The coherent soft mode shows large red-shift and heavily over-damped decay as the temperature approaching T$_{c}$ from the low

We examine the T=0 phase diagram of a thin ferromagnetic film with a strong out-of-plane anisotropy in the vicinity of the reorientation phase transition (with Co on Pt as an example). The phase diagram in the anisotropy-applied field plane is universal in the limit where the film thickness is the shortest length scale. It contains uniform fully magnetized a

We construct finitely generated groups with arbitrary prescribed Hilbert space compression \alpha from the interval [0,1]. For a large class of Banach spaces E (including all uniformly convex Banach spaces), the E-compression of these groups coincides with their Hilbert space compression. Moreover, the groups that we construct have asymptotic dimension at mo

We consider hot carrier inelastic scattering due to electron--electron interactions in graphene, as functions of carrier energy and density. We calculate the imaginary part of the zero-temperature quasiparticle self-energy for doped graphene, utlizing the $G_0W$ and random phases approximations. Using the full dynamically screened Coulomb interaction, we obt

The microwave conductivity of an ultra-pure single crystal of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.50}$ has been measured deep in the superconducting state as a continuous function of frequency from $0.5\to20$ GHz. Conductivity spectra were first measured at four temperatures below 10 K after having prepared the crystal in the so called ortho-II phase in which the CuO chain o

Random bit generators (RBGs) are key components of a variety of information processing applications ranging from simulations to cryptography. In particular, cryptographic systems require "strong" RBGs that produce high-entropy bit sequences, but traditional software pseudo-RBGs have very low entropy content and therefore are relatively weak for crypt

A quantum microcanonical postulate is proposed as a basis for the equilibrium properties of small quantum systems. Expressions for the corresponding density of states are derived, and are used to establish the existence of phase transitions for finite quantum systems. A grand microcanonical ensemble is introduced, which can be used to obtain new rigorous res

We present the experimental realization of optimal symmetric and asymmetric phase-covariant 1->2 cloning of qubit states using fiber optics. State of each qubit is encoded into a single photon which can propagate through two optical fibers. The operation of our device is based on one- and two-photon interference. We have demonstrated creation of two copies o

Geometric quantum mechanics aims to express the physical properties of quantum systems in terms of geometrical features preferentially selected in the space of pure states. Geometric characterisations are given here for systems of one, two, and three spin-1/2 particles, drawing attention to the classification of quantum states into entanglement types.
New experimental limit on Pauli Exclusion Principle violation by electrons (the VIP experiment)

The Pauli exclusion principle (PEP) represents one of the basic principles of modern physics and, even if there are no compelling reasons to doubt its validity, it still spurs a lively debate, because an intuitive, elementary explanation is still missing, and because of its unique stand among the basic symmetries of physics. A new limit on the probability th

Two misuses of one-time pad in improving the efficiency of quantum communication are pointed out. One happens when using some message bits to encrypt others, the other exists because the key bits are not truly random. Both of them result in the decrease of security. Therefore, one-time pad should be used carefully in designing quantum communication protocols

We present a new way of encoding a quantum computation into a 3-local Hamiltonian. Our construction is novel in that it does not include any terms that induce legal-illegal clock transitions. Therefore, the weights of the terms in the Hamiltonian do not scale with the size of the problem as in previous constructions. This improves the construction by Kempe a
Multi-impurity effects on the entanglement of anisotropic Heisenberg ring XXZ under a homogeneous magnetic field
quant-phGao Wen Bin, Yang Guo Hui, Zhou Ling
The effects of multi-impurity on the entanglement of anisotropic Heisenberg ring XXZ under a homogeneous magnetic field have been studied. The impurities make the equal pairwise entanglement in a ring compete with each other so that the pairwise entanglement exhibits oscillation. If the impurities are of larger couplings, both the critical temperature and pa

We consider how transfer of genetic information between individuals influences the phase diagram and mean fitness of both the Eigen and the parallel, or Crow-Kimura, models of evolution. In the absence of genetic transfer, these physical models of evolution consider the replication and point mutation of the genomes of independent individuals in a large popul

The dynamics of photonic wavepacket in the effective oscillator potential is studied. The oscillator potential is constructed on a base of one dimensional photonic crystal with a period of unit cell adiabatically varied in space. The structure has a locally equidistant discrete spectrum. This leads to an echo effect, i.e. the periodical reconstruction of the
