A strengthened form of Schur's triangularization theorem is given for quaternion matrices with real spectrum (for complex matrices it was given by Littlewood). Littlewood's algorithm for reducing a complex matrix to a canonical form under unitary similarity is extended to quaternion matrices whose eigenvalues have geometric multiplicity 1.

It is known that the number of biquandle colorings of a long virtual knot diagram, with a fixed color of the initial arc, is a knot invariant. In this paper we describe a more subtle invariant: a family of biquandle endomorphisms obtained from the set of colorings and longitudinal information.

We prove that the problems of classifying triples of symmetric or skew-symmetric matrices up to congruence, local commutative associative algebras with zero cube radical and square radical of dimension 3, and Lie algebras with central commutator subalgebra of dimension 3 are hopeless since each of them reduces to the problem of classifying pairs of n-by-n ma

We analyze the operation of a resonant detector of terahertz (THz) radiation based on a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) channel with split gates. The side gates are used for the excitation of plasma oscillations by incoming THz radiation and control of the resonant plasma frequencies. The central gate provides the potential barrier separating the source

Injectivity of objects with respect to a set $\ch$ of morphisms is an important concept of algebra, model theory and homotopy theory. Here we study the logic of injectivity consequences of $\ch$, by which we understand morphisms $h$ such that injectivity with respect to $\ch$ implies injectivity with respect to $h$. We formulate three simple deduction rules

We prove that over an algebraically closed field of characteristic not two the problems of classifying pairs of sesquilinear forms in which the second is Hermitian, pairs of bilinear forms in which the second is symmetric (skew-symmetric), and local algebras with zero cube radical and square radical of dimension 2 are hopeless since each of them reduces to t

Fragmentation functions of pion, kaon, and nucleon are determined by global analyses of hadron-production data in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. It is particularly important that uncertainties of the fragmentation functions are estimated for the first time. Some experiments, performed at Berkeley, Cologne, Florence, Vienna, Orsay, Rennes, etc., led to the claim that something seems to travel with a group velocity larger than the speed c of light in vacuum. Various other experimental results seem to point in the same direction: For instance, localized wavelet- type solutions to Maxwell equations have been found,

For positive integers d, r, and M, we consider the class of rational functions on real d-dimensional space whose denominators are products of at most r functions of the form 1+Q(x) where each Q is a quadratic form with eigenvalues bounded above by M and below by 1/M. Let $R$ be a local ring and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. The complete intersection dimension of $M$--defined by Avramov, Gasharov and Peeva, and denoted $\cidim_R(M)$--is a homological invariant whose finiteness implies that $M$ is similar to a module over a complete intersection. It is related to the classical projective dimension and to Auslander a

We report our attempts to locate the progenitor of the peculiar type Ic SN 2007gr in HST pre-explosion images of the host galaxy, NGC 1058. Aligning adaptive optics Altair/NIRI imaging of SN 2007gr from the Gemini (North) Telescope with the pre-explosion HST WFPC2 images, we identify the SN position on the HST frames with an accuracy of 20 mas. Although noth

Let $G\subset\GL(V)$ be a complex reductive group where $\dim V<\infty$, and let $π\colon V\to\quot VG$ be the categorical quotient. Let $\NN:=π\invπ(0)$ be the null cone of $V$, let $H_0$ be the subgroup of $\GL(V)$ which preserves the ideal $\I$ of $\NN$ and let $H$ be a Levi subgroup of $H_0$ containing $G$. We determine the identity component of $H$. In

We study the cosmological constraints on unparticle interactions and the temperature of the Universe for the case where unparticle states can be modelled as continuous mass particles with lifetime > 1s. By considering thermal background quark decay to continuous mass scalars via a scalar operator of dimension d_{U}, we show that the condition that the Univer

The superconductor UCoGe is analyzed with electronic structure calculations using Linearized Augmented Plane Wave method based on Density Functional Theory. Ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic calculations with and without correlations (via LDA+U) were done. In this compound the Fermi level is situated in a region where the main contribution to DOS comes fro

Elliptic pseudoanalytic function theory was considered independently by Bers and Vekua decades ago. In this paper we develop a hyperbolic analogue of pseudoanalytic function theory using the algebra of hyperbolic numbers. We consider the Klein-Gordon equation with a potential. With the aid of one particular solution we factorize the Klein-Gordon operator in

Twistor string theory is known to describe a wide variety of field theories at tree-level and has proved extremely useful in making substantial progress in perturbative gauge theory. We explore the twistor dual description of a class of N=2 UV-finite super-Yang-Mills theories with fundamental flavour by adding 'flavour' branes to the topological B-mo

The pressing need for eficient compression schemes for XML documents has recently been focused on stack computation [6, 9], and in particular calls for a formulation of information-lossless stack or pushdown compressors that allows a formal analysis of their performance and a more ambitious use of the stack in XML compression, where so far it is mainly conne

Motivated by recent experiments showing the buckling of microtubules in cells, we study theoretically the mechanical response of, and force propagation along elastic filaments embedded in a non-linear elastic medium. We find that, although embedded microtubules still buckle when their compressive load exceeds the critical value $f_c$ found earlier, the resul

In this paper we extend the concept of a conjugate point in a Riemannian manifold to complete length spaces (also known as geodesic spaces). In particular, we introduce symmetric conjugate points and ultimate conjugate points. We then generalize the long homotopy lemma of Klingenberg to this setting as well as the injectivity radius estimate also due to Klin

We present the formalism for the decay of dynamically generated scalar mesons with open- or hidden-charm and give results for the decay of D^*_{s0} (2317) to γD_s^* plus that of a hidden charm scalar meson state predicted by the theory around 3700 MeV decaying into γJ/ψ.

The properties of the resonant Gamow states are studied numerically in the semiclassical limit for the quantum Chirikov standard map with absorption. It is shown that the number of such states is described by the fractal Weyl law and their Husimi distributions closely follow the strange repeller set formed by classical orbits nonescaping in future times. From the exact single step evolution equation of the two-point correlation function of a particle distribution subjected to a stochastic displacement field $\bu(\bx)$, we derive different dynamical regimes when $\bu(\bx)$ is iterated to build a velocity field. First we show that spatially uncorrelated fields $\bu(\bx)$ lead to both standard and anomalous dif

Spectroscopic observations of a solar limb flare recorded by SUMER on SOHO reveal, for the first time, hot fast magnetic reconnection outflows in the corona. As the reconnection site rises across the SUMER spectrometer slit, significant blue- and red-shift signatures are observed in sequence in the Fe XIX line, reflecting upflows and downflows of hot plasma

The Fredholm representation theory is well adapted to construction of homotopy invariants of non simply connected manifolds on the base of generalized Hirzebruch formula. Earlier a natural family of the Fredholm representations was constructed that lead to a symmetric vector bundle on completion of the fundamental group with a modification of the Higson-Roe
