We analyse the scattering of sine-Gordon breathers on a square potential well. We show that the scattering process depends not only on the vibration frequency of the breather and its incoming speed but also on its phase as well as the depth and width of the well. We show that the breather can pass through the well and exit with a speed different, sometime la
Chirality-Biased Point Defects Dynamics on a Disclination Line in a Nematic Liquid Crystal
cond-mat.softAndrzej Zywocinski, Katarzyna Pawlak, Robert Holyst, Patrick Oswald
Chiral additives in the nematic liquid crystal can alter the dynamics of point defects moving on a disclination line. They exert a constant force on defects, leading to the bimodal distribution of distances between them at long times. The evolution of the system of defects in the presence of chiral additives provides a very direct proof of the existence of r

Importance sampling is a technique that is commonly used to speed up Monte Carlo simulation of rare events. We resolve the existing controversy concerning the selection of the sign of the normal-to-the-interface component of the wave-vector $k_z$ of an electromagnetic wave in an active (gain) medium. We investigate an extension to the phase shift formalism for calculating one-loop determinants. This extension is motivated by requirements of the computation of Z-string quantum energies in D=3+1 dimensions. A subtlety that seems to imply that the vacuum polarization diagram in this formalism is (erroneously) finite is thoroughly investigated.

Ordinary differential equations (ODE's) are widespread models in physics, chemistry and biology. In particular, this mathematical formalism is used for describing the evolution of complex systems and it might consist of high-dimensional sets of coupled nonlinear differential equations. In this setting, we propose a general method for estimating the param

Mode-coupling theory (MCT) of sheared dense granular liquids %in the vicinity of jamming transition is formulated. Starting from the Liouville equation of granular particles, the generalized Langevin equation is derived with the aid of the projection operator technique. The MCT equation for the density correlation function obtained from the generalized Lange

Outside a black hole, perturbation fields die off in time as $1/t^n$. For spherical holes $n=2\ell+3$ where $\ell$ is the multipole index. In the nonspherical Kerr spacetime there is no coordinate-independent meaning of "multipole," and a common sense viewpoint is to set $\ell$ to the lowest radiatiable index, although theoretical studies have led to
Composition-dependent polarization switching behaviors of (111)-preferred polycrystalline Pb(Zr_{x}Ti_{1-x})O_{3} thin films

We investigated the time-dependent polarization switching behaviors of (111)-preferred polycrystalline Pb(ZrxTi1-x)O3 thin films with various Zr concentrations. We could explain all the polarization switching behaviors well by assuming Lorentzian distributions in the logarithmic polarization switching time [Refer to J. Y. Jo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. (in pres

In this paper, we investigate the characteristic structure of the full equations of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and show that it satisfies the hypotheses of a general variable-multiplicity stability frame- work introduced by Metivier and Zumbrun, thereby extending to the general case various results obtained by Metivier and Zumbrun for the isentropic equation

We present a detailed study of the Higgs sector within an extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model that includes one Complex Higgs Triplet (MSSM+1CHT). The model spectrum includes three singly charged Higgs bosons as well as three CP-even (or scalar) and two CP-odd (or pseudoscalar) neutral Higgs bosons. We present an approximated calculation o

We describe QWalk, a new computational package capable of performing Quantum Monte Carlo electronic structure calculations for molecules and solids with many electrons. We describe the structure of the program and its implementation of Quantum Monte Carlo methods. It is open-source, licensed under the GPL, and available at the web site http://www.qwalk.org

Here we present a brief overview of UC HII regions with EE (UC HII+EE) including our most recent effort aimed at searching for UC HII regions associated with extended emission.
Effect of Interactions on Molecular Fluxes and Fluctuations in the Transport Across Membrane Channels
cond-mat.softAnatoly B. Kolomeisky, Stanislav Kotsev
Transport of molecules across membrane channels is investigated theoretically using exactly solvable one-dimensional discrete-state stochastic models. An interaction between molecules and membrane pores is modeled via a set of binding sites with different energies. It is shown that the interaction potential strongly influences the particle currents as well a

We present a study of the effect of charm quarks on the QCD equation of state using partially-quenched p4 charm quarks on a dynamically generated 2+1 flavor background, at zero chemical potential. We show preliminary results for the charm quark contribution to the energy density and pressure in the high temperature region ($T_c < T < 4 T_c$) and compare it t
Schemes for robust quantum computation with polar molecules: analysis of experimental feasibility
quant-phElena Kuznetsova, Robin Côté, Kate Kirby, Susanne Yelin
We analyse recently proposed physical implementations of a quantum computer based on polar molecules. A set of general requirements for a molecular system is presented, which would provide an optimal combination of quantum gate times, coherence times, number of operations, high gate accuracy and experimental feasibility. We proceed with a detailed analysis o

The qualitative solvent- and temperature-dependent conformational behavior of a peptide in the proximity of solid substrates with different adsorption properties is investigated by means of a simple lattice model. The resulting pseudophase diagrams exhibit a complex structure, which can be understood by analysing the minima of the free-energy landscape in de

We present deep WIYN H-alpha imaging of the dwarf irregular starburst galaxy NGC 1569, together with WIYN SparsePak spatially-resolved optical spectroscopy of the galactic outflow. This leads on from our previous detailed analyses of the state of the ISM in the central regions of this galaxy. Our deep imaging reveals previously undetected ionized filaments i

Simple coarse-grained hydrophobic-polar models for heteropolymers as the lattice HP and the off-lattice AB model allow a general classification of characteristic behaviors for hydrophobic-core based tertiary folding. The strongly reduced computational efforts enable one to reveal systematically the thermodynamic properties of comparatively long sequences in
