The discovery of extra-solar planets is one of the greatest achievements of modern astronomy. The detection of planets with a wide range of masses demonstrates that extra-solar planets of low mass exist. In this paper we describe a mission, called Darwin, whose primary goal is the search for, and characterization of, terrestrial extrasolar planets and the se

Sergey Kitaev has shown that the exponential generating function for permutations avoiding the generalized pattern $σ$-$k$, where $σ$ is a pattern without dashes and $k$ is one greater than the biggest element in $σ$, is determined by the exponential generating function for permutations avoiding $σ$. Extending the formalism of Datta, Bharadwaj & Choudhury (2007) for detecting ionized bubbles in redshifted 21 cm maps using a matched-filtering technique, we use different simulations to analyze the impact of HI fluctuations outside the bubble on the detectability of the bubble. In the first three kinds of simulations there is a spherical bubble of comoving

To explain their observed radii, we present theoretical radius-age trajectories for the extrasolar giant planets (EGPs) TrES-4, XO-3b, and HAT-P-1b. We factor in variations in atmospheric opacity, the presence of an inner heavy-element core, and possible heating due to orbital tidal dissipation. A small, yet non-zero, degree of core heating is needed to expl

We prove that the results of a finite set of general quantum measurements on an arbitrary dimensional quantum system can be simulated using a polynomial (in measurements) number of hidden-variable states. In the limit of infinitely many measurements, our method gives models with the minimal number of hidden-variable states, which scales linearly with the num

Modified gravity theories have received increased attention lately due to combined motivation coming from high-energy physics, cosmology and astrophysics. Among numerous alternatives to Einstein's theory of gravity, theories which include higher order curvature invariants, and specifically the particular class of f(R) theories, have a long history. In th

Under the combined constraints of rapid rotation, sphericity, and magnetic field, motions in planetary cores get organized in a peculiar way. Classical hydrodynamic turbulence is not present, but turbulent motions can take place under the action of the buoyancy and Laplace forces. Laboratory experiments, such as the rotating spherical magnetic Couette DTS ex
The Minkowski question mark function: explicit series for the dyadic period function and moments
math.NTGiedrius Alkauskas
Previously, several natural integral transforms of the Minkowski question mark function F(x) were introduced by the author. Each of them is uniquely characterized by certain regularity conditions and the functional equation, thus encoding intrinsic information about F(x). One of them - the dyadic period function G(z) - was defined as a Stieltjes transform. I

Two principles explain emergence. First, in the Receipt's reference frame, Deg(S) = 4/3 Deg(R), where Supply S is an isotropic radiative energy source, Receipt R receives S's energy, and Deg is a system's degrees of freedom based on its mean path length. S's 1/3 more degrees of freedom relative to R enables R's growth and increasing compl

This contribution highlights recent results from the PHENIX Collaboration at RHIC. It covers global variables, flow and 2--particle correlations. A second contribution in this issue, by T.C.Awes, covers PHENIX results on heavy quarks, leptons and photons.

We present a single inequality as the necessary and sufficient condition for two unsharp observables of a two-level system to be jointly measurable in a single apparatus and construct explicitly the joint observables. A complementarity inequality arising from the condition of joint measurement, which generalizes Englert's duality inequality, is derived a

We analyze the vacuum structure of N=1/2 chiral supersymmetric theories in deformed superspace. In particular we study O'Raifeartaigh models with C-deformed superpotentials and canonical and non-canonical deformed Kahler potentials. We find conditions under which the vacuum configurations are affected by the deformations.

Microquasars are binary systems that harbor a normal star and a compact object (black-hole or neutron star), and show relativistic outflows (or jets). The matter that forms these jets is of likely stellar origin, previously expelled from the star and trapped in the potential well of the compact object. This matter is accreted by the compact object, forming a

The energy spectrum of nuclear recoils in Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) direct detection experiments depends on the underlying WIMP mass. We study how the accuracy with which the WIMP mass could be determined by a single direct detection experiment depends on the detector configuration and the WIMP properties. We investigate the effects of varyi

There are three Galactic jet sources, from which TeV emission has been detected: LS 5039, LS I +61 303 and Cygnus X-1. These three sources show power-law tails at X-rays and soft gamma-rays that could indicate a non-thermal origin for this radiation. In addition, all three sources apparently show correlated and complex behavior at X-ray and TeV energies. In

Given a function f with an absolutely convergent Fourier series, we define the norm of f as ||f||_A = the sum of absolute values of the Fourier coefficients of f. We study the behavior of ||f^n||_A as n goes to infinity, for f of the form exp(ih(t)) where h is a real, odd and twice continuously differentiable function such that h(t + 2π) = h(t) + 2kπfor some

In a previous work, the authors proposed a Grammatical Evolution algorithm to automatically generate Lindenmayer Systems which represent fractal curves with a pre-determined fractal dimension. This paper gives strong statistical evidence that the probability distributions of the execution time of that algorithm exhibits a heavy tail with an hyperbolic probab

With model building applications in mind, we collect and develop basic techniques to analyze the landscape of D7-branes in type IIB compact Calabi-Yau orientifolds, in three different pictures: F-theory, the D7 worldvolume theory and D9-anti-D9 tachyon condensation. A significant complication is that consistent D7-branes in the presence of O7^- planes are ge

This paper is placed at the intersection-point between the study of theoretical computational models aimed at capturing the essence of genetic regulatory networks and the field of Artificial Embryology (or Computational Development). A model is proposed, with the objective of providing an effective way to generate arbitrary forms by using evolutionary-develo
