Geigermode avalanche photodiodes (G-APD) are novel photodetectors, which can detect single photons. This type of diodes might become an alternative to photomultipliers (PMT) in next-generation Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes. Prospects, limitations and development directions are be discussed. Results from first tests are reported.

A conceptual design of an advanced Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescope with a 23 m diameter mirror and of 50 tons weight will be presented. A system photon detection efficiency of 15-17%, averaged over 300-600 nm, is aimed at to lower the threshold to 10-20 GeV. Prospects for a second generation camera with Geiger-mode Avalanche Photo Diodes will be discussed.

A procedure to solve few-body problems is developed which is based on an expansion over a small parameter. We survey some results on homological dimensions of the algebraic, complex analytic, and smooth quantum tori. Our main theorem states, in particular, that the smooth and the complex analytic quantum n-tori have global dimension n. This contrasts with the result of McConnell and Pettit (1988) who proved that, in the generic case, the algebraic quantum n-torus

Specialized intelligent systems can be found everywhere: finger print, handwriting, speech, and face recognition, spam filtering, chess and other game programs, robots, et al. This decade the first presumably complete mathematical theory of artificial intelligence based on universal induction-prediction-decision-action has been proposed. This information-the
Mott Insulating Ground State and its Proximity to Spin-Orbit Insulators in Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$

We present an anti-ferromagnetically ordered ground state of Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ based on density-functional-theory calculations including both spin-orbit coupling and on-site Coulomb interaction $U$. We show that the splitting of $e_{g}'$ doublet states by the strong spin-orbit coupling is mainly responsible for the intriguing nature of its insulating gap

The S=2 anisotropic triangular lattice alpha-NaMnO2 is studied by neutron inelastic scattering. Antiferromagnetic order occurs at T ~ 45 K with opening of a spin gap. The spectral weight of the magnetic dynamics above the gap (Delta ~ 7.5 meV) has been analysed by the single-mode approximation. Excellent agreement with the experiment is achieved when a domin

Although many authors have considered how many ternary comparisons it takes to sort a multiset $S$ of size $n$, the best known upper and lower bounds still differ by a term linear in $n$. In this paper we restrict our attention to online stable sorting and prove upper and lower bounds that are within (o (n)) not only of each other but also of the best known

The black-hole information paradox has fueled a fascinating effort to reconcile the predictions of general relativity and those of quantum mechanics. Gravitational considerations teach us that black holes must trap everything that falls into them. Quantum mechanically the mass of a black hole leaks away as featureless (Hawking) radiation. However, if Hawking
Five-Fold Reduction of Lasing Threshold near the First $ΓL$-Pseudogap of ZnO Inverse Opals

We report room temperature lasing in ZnO inverse opal photonic crystals in the near-ultraviolet (UV) frequency. We observe random lasing due to disorder in the structures when the photonic pseudogaps are located away from the ZnO gain spectrum. Tuning the first $ΓL$-pseudogap to the gain peak leads to a five-fold reduction in lasing threshold and frequency s

Expounded are the parameter measurement for narrow resonance and determination of corresponding luminosity at e+e- collider. The detailed theoretical formulas are compiled and the crucial experimental effects on observed cross section are taken into account. For luminosity determination, the iteration method is put forth which is mainly used to separate the

If the hemispherical power asymmetry observed in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) on large angular scales is attributable to a superhorizon curvaton fluctuation, then the simplest model predicts that the primordial density fluctuations should be similarly asymmetric on all smaller scales. The distribution of high-redshift quasars was recently used to co

We present predictions for the fluorescent Lyman-alpha emission signature arising from photoionized, optically thick structures in Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic (SPH) cosmological simulations of a Lambda-CDM universe using a Monte Carlo Lyman-alpha radiative transfer code. We calculate the expected Lyman-alpha image and 2-dimensional spectra for gas exposed

We provide a corrector theory for the strong approximation of fields inside composites made from two materials with different power law behavior. The correctors are used to develop bounds on the local singularity strength for gradient fields inside micro-structured media. The bounds are multi-scale in nature and can be used to measure the amplification of ap

We study symmetric powers in the homotopy categories of abstract closed symmetric monoidal model categories, in both unstable and stable settings. As an outcome, we prove that symmetric powers preserve the Nisnevich and etale homotopy type in the unstable and stable motivic homotopy theories of schemes over a base. More precisely, if f is a weak equivalence
Constraints on the multi-TeV particle population in the Coma Galaxy Cluster with H.E.S.S. observations

The H.E.S.S. (High Energy Stereoscopic System) telescopes observed Coma for ~8hr in a search for gamma-ray emission at energies >1TeV. The large 3.5deg FWHM field of view of H.E.S.S. is ideal for viewing a range of targets at various sizes including the Coma cluster core, the radio-relic (1253+275) and merger/infall (NGC 4839) regions to the southwest, and f
