The focus is placed on classic collocation, even though the requirements that a numerical scheme has to fulfill in order to allow for a correct approximat
Negative index of refraction, perfect lenses and transformation optics -- some words of caution

In this paper we show that a negative index of refraction is not a direct implication of transformation optics with orientation-reversing diffeomorphisms. Rather a negative index appears due to a specific choice of sign freedom. Furthermore, we point out that the transformation designed lens, which relies on the concept of spacetime folding, does not amplify

In the present paper a new concept is introduced that: `mass is a complex quantity'. The concept of complex-mass suggests that the total mass M of a moving body is complex sum of: (i) the real-part (grain or rest) mass $m_{g}$ establishing its particle behaviour and (ii) the imaginary-part mass $m_{p}$ governing its wave properties. Mathematically, the c

We present the J-band luminosity function of 1838 mid-infrared and X-ray selected AGNs in the redshift range 0<z<5.85. These luminosity functions are constructed by combining the deep multi-wavelength broad-band observations from the UV to the mid-IR of the NDWFS Bootes field with the X-ray observations of the XBootes survey and the spectroscopic observation

A Fourier transformation in a fractional dimensional space of order $\la$ ($0<\la\leq 1$) is defined to solve the Schrödinger equation with Riesz fractional derivatives of order $\a$. This new method is applied for a particle in a fractional $δ$-potential well defined by $V(x) =- γδ^{\la}(x)$, where $γ>0$ and $δ^{\la}(x)$ is the fractional Dirac delta functi

We study the entanglement dynamics in the system of coupled quantum fields. We prove that if the coupling is linear, that is if the total Hamiltonian is a quadratic form of field operators, entanglement can only be transferred between the fields. We show that entanglement is produced in the model of the two-mode self-interacting boson field with the characte
The CDF, the D0 Collaborations, :, T. Aaltonen
We combine searches by the CDF and D0 collaborations for a Higgs boson decaying to W+W-. The data correspond to an integrated total luminosity of 4.8 (CDF) and 5.4 (D0) fb-1 of p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. No excess is observed above background expectation, and resulting limits on Higgs boson production exclude a s
Phase sensitive measurements of order parameters for ultracold atoms through two particles interferometry
cond-mat.quant-gasTakuya Kitagawa, Alain Aspect, Marcus Greiner, Eugene Demler
Nontrivial symmetry of order parameters is crucial in some of the most interesting quantum many-body states of ultracold atoms and condensed matter systems. Examples in cold atoms include p-wave Feshbach molecules and d-wave paired states of fermions that could be realized in optical lattices in the Hubbard regime. Identifying these states in experiments req

Let $p>3$ be a prime. We prove that $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\binom{2k}{k}/2^k=(-1)^{(p-1)/2}-p^2E_{p-3} (mod p^3),$$ $$\sum_{k=1}^{(p-1)/2}\binom{2k}{k}/k=(-1)^{(p+1)/2}8/3*pE_{p-3} (mod p^2),$$ $$\sum_{k=0}^{(p-1)/2}\binom{2k}{k}^2/16^k=(-1)^{(p-1)/2}+p^2E_{p-3} (mod p^3)$$, where E_0,E_1,E_2,... are Euler numbers. Our new approach is of combinatorial nature. We

The paper studies scaling limits of random skew plane partitions confined to a box when the inner shapes converge uniformly to a piecewise linear function V of arbitrary slopes in [-1,1]. It is shown that the correlation kernels in the bulk are given by the incomplete Beta kernel, as expected. As a consequence it is established that the local correlation fun

We investigate the implications of the entropic force formalism proposed by Verlinde. We show that an UV/IR relation proposed by Cohen et al, as well as an uncertainty principle proposed by Hogan can be derived from the entropic force formalism. We show that applying the entropic force formalism to cosmology, there is an additional term in the Friedmann equa

The ground state of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with both frustration and long-range interactions is studied using Lanczos exact diagonalization. The evolution of the well known dimerization transition of the system with short-range frustrated interactions (the J1-J2 chain) is investigated in the presence of additional unfrustrated interactions decaying with
Inclusive Search for Standard Model Higgs Boson Production in the WW Decay Channel using the CDF II Detector
hep-exThe CDF Collaboration, T. Aaltonen
We present a search for standard model (SM) Higgs boson production using ppbar collision data at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV, collected with the CDF II detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.8 fb-1. We search for Higgs bosons produced in all processes with a significant production rate and decaying to two W bosons. We find no evidence for SM Higg
Short-Time Operator Product Expansion for rf Spectroscopy of a Strongly-interacting Fermi Gas
cond-mat.quant-gasEric Braaten, Daekyoung Kang, Lucas Platter
Universal relations that hold for any state provide powerful constraints on systems consisting of fermions with two spin states interacting with a large scattering length. In radio-frequency (rf) spectroscopy, the mean shift in the rf frequency and the large frequency tail of the rf transition rate are proportional to the contact, which measures the density

We study numerically various wave functions in a gauged matrix quantum mechanics of six commuting hermitian $N\times N$ matrices. Our simulations span ranges of $N$ up to 10000. This system is a truncated and quenched version of N=4 SYM that serves as a minisuperspace approximation to the full ${\cal N}=4$ SYM system. This setup encodes aspects of the geomet

We study fully nonlinear elliptic equations such as \[ F(D^2u) = u^p, \quad p>1, \] in $\R^n$ or in exterior domains, where $F$ is any uniformly elliptic, positively homogeneous operator. We show that there exists a critical exponent, depending on the homogeneity of the fundamental solution of $F$, that sharply characterizes the range of $p>1$ for which ther

We highlight modular equations discovered by Somos and Ramanujan, and use them to prove new relations between lattice sums and hypergeometric functions. We also discuss progress towards solving Boyd's Mahler measure conjectures, and we conjecture a new formula for $L(E,2)$ of conductor 17 elliptic curves.

In this paper we consider the problem of connected edge searching of weighted trees. It is shown that there exists a polynomial-time algorithm for finding optimal connected search strategy for bounded degree trees with arbitrary weights on the edges and vertices of the tree. The problem is NP-complete for general node-weighted trees (the weight of each edge

New Completely Integrable (2+1)-System is studied. It is based on the so-called L-A-B-triples $L_t=[H,L]-fL$ where L is a 2D Schrodinger Operator. This approach was invented by S.Manakov and B.Dubrovin, I.Krichever, S.Novikov(DKN) in the works published in 1976. A nonstandard reduction for the 2D Schrodinger Operator (completely different from the one found

We develop a formalism to describe the formation of bound states in quantum field theory using an exact renormalization group flow equation. As a concrete example we investigate a nonrelativistic field theory with instantaneous interaction where the flow equations can be solved exactly. However, the formalism is more general and can be applied to relativisti

Stability of electro-hydrodynamic processes between ion-exchange membranes is investigated. Solutions of the equilibrium problem are commonly described in the one-dimensional (1D) steady-state approximation. In the present work, a novel class of 1D unsteady self-similar equilibrium solutions is developed, whose existence is supported by recent experiments. 1

The level lines of the Gaussian free field are known to be related to SLE(4). It is shown how this relation allows to define chordal SLE(4) processes on doubly connected domains, describing traces that are anchored on one of the two boundary components. The precise nature of the processes depends on the conformally invariant boundary conditions imposed on th
