The phenomenological equations of motion for the relaxation of ordered phases of magnetized and polarized crystal phases can be developed in close analogy with one another. We formulate a minimal ansatz for local stress distribution in a solid that includes the possibility of strongly anharmonic short-length motions. We discover a broken-symmetry metastable phase that exhibits an aperiodic, frozen-in stress distribution. An exact particle method for scalar conservation laws and its application to stiff reaction kinetics
math.NAYossi Farjoun, Benjamin Seibold
An "exact" method for scalar one-dimensional hyperbolic conservation laws is presented. The approach is based on the evolution of shock particles, separated by local similarity solutions. The numerical solution is defined everywhere, and is as accurate as the applied ODE solver. Furthermore, the method is extended to stiff balance laws. A special cor

Let p be a prime = 3 (mod 4). A number of elegant number-theoretical properties of the sums T(p) = \sqrt{p}sum_{n=1}^{(p-1)/2} tan(n^2π/p) and C(p) = \sqrt{p}sum_{n=1}^{(p-1)/2} cot(n^2π/p) are proved. For example, T(p) equals p times the excess of the odd quadratic residues over the even ones in the set {1,2,...,p-1}; this number is positive if p = 3 (mod 8

We present some results on equivariant KK-theory in the context of tensor triangular geometry. More specifically, for G a finite group, we show that the spectrum of the tensor triangulated subcategory of KK^G generated by the tensor unit contains as a retract a canonical copy of the Zariski spectrum of the complex character ring of G. For G trivial, this inc

A finitely generated module C over a commutative noetherian ring R is semidualizing if Hom_R(C,C) \cong R and Ext^i_R(C,C) = 0 for all i \geq 1. For certain local Cohen-Macaulay rings (R,m), we verify the equality of Hilbert-Samuel multiplicities e_R(J;C) = e_R(J;R) for all semidualizing R-modules C and all m-primary ideals J. The classes of rings we investi

We have investigated the domain wall resistance for two types of domain walls in a (Ga,Mn)As Hall bar with perpendicular magnetization. A sizeable positive intrinsic DWR is inferred for domain walls that are pinned at an etching step, which is quite consistent with earlier observations. However, much lower intrinsic domain wall resistance is obtained when do

With the growing focus on semantic searches and interpretations, an increasing number of standardized vocabularies and ontologies are being designed and used to describe data. We investigate the querying of objects described by a tree-structured ontology. Specifically, we consider the case of finding the top-k best pairs of objects that have been annotated w

We provide a mathematically rigorous framework for supersymmetric fermion lattice systems. We construct supersymmetric C*-dynamics in terms of a nilpotent superderivation and a one-parameter group of automorphisms on the CAR-algebra. (We do not make use of Grassmann numbers.) We establish several basic properties of superderivations on the fermion lattice sy

The current status of the recent developments of the second-order gauge-invariant cosmological perturbation theory is reviewed. To show the essence of this perturbation theory, we concentrate only on the universe filled with a single scalar field. Through this review, we point out the problems which should be clarified for the further theoretical sophisticat

The linear response of a neutron spin-triplet superfluid onto external weak axial-vector field is studied for the case of $^{3}P_{2}$ pairing with a projection of the total angular momentum $m_{j}=0$. The problem is considered in the BCS approximation discarding Fermi-liquid effects. The anomalous axial-vector vertices of neutron quasiparticles possess singu

We consider the problem of computing the q->p norm of a matrix A, which is defined for p,q \ge 1, as |A|_{q->p} = max_{x !=0 } |Ax|_p / |x|_q. This is in general a non-convex optimization problem, and is a natural generalization of the well-studied question of computing singular values (this corresponds to p=q=2). Different settings of parameters give rise t

We show how the measured particle ratios at RHIC can be used to provide non-trivial information about the critical temperature of the QCD phase transition. This is obtained by including the effects of highly massive Hagedorn resonances on statistical models, which are used to describe hadronic yields. Hagedorn states are relevant close to $T_c$ and have been

We discuss the scale-free property of Wilson's numerical renormalization group(NRG) for the Kondo impurity problem. The single-particle state of the effective Hamiltonian with a cutoff $Λ$ is described by the wavepacket basis having the scale free property; The energy scale of the system can be controlled by the lattice translation of the wavepacket basi

Reheating is an important part of inflationary cosmology. It describes the production of Standard Matter particles after the phase of accelerated expansion. We give a review of the reheating process, focusing on an in-depth discussion of the preheating stage which is characterized by exponential particle production due to a parametric resonance or tachyonic
