We focus on D-brane models in presence of closed string background fluxes. These fluxes modify the effective interactions on Dirichlet and Euclidean branes, in particular inducing fermionic masses. We show how they can create new non-perturbative superpotential terms in presence of gauge and exotic instantons in SQCD-like models.

We present an analysis of a high resolution (R = 40000) infrared spectrum of the RS Oph secondary around the first overtone CO bands, obtained in 2008 May on the Gemini South 8 m. We investigate the hadron-quark phase transition inside neutron stars and obtain mass-radius relations for hybrid stars. There are at least two ways to interpret numerical degrees of belief in terms of betting: (1) you can offer to bet at the odds defined by the degrees of belief, or (2) you can judge that a strategy for taking advantage of such betting offers will not multiply the capital it risks by a large factor. Both interpretations can be applied to ordinary additive pro

Recently we have shown that the centrality dependence of the multiplicity of different hadron species observed in RHIC and SPS experiments can be well understood in a simple model, dubbed core-corona model. There it is assumed that those incoming nucleons which scatter only once produce hadrons as in pp collisions whereas those which scatter more often form

Implicit Regularization is a 4-dimensional regularization initially conceived to treat ultraviolet divergences. It has been successfully tested in several instances in the literature, more specifically in those where Dimensional Regularization does not apply. In the present contribution we extend the method to handle infrared divergences as well. We show tha

We show that a convolution semigroup of measures has Jacobi parameters polynomial in the convolution parameter $t$ if and only if the measures come from the Meixner class. Moreover, we prove the parallel result, in a more explicit way, for the free convolution and the free Meixner class. We then construct the class of measures satisfying the same property fo

Let C_T be the subgroup of the smooth knot concordance group generated by topologically slice knots and let C_D be the subgroup generated by knots with trivial Alexander polynomial. We prove the quotient C_T/C_D is infinitely generated, and uncover similar structure in the 3-dimensional rational spin bordism group. Our methods also lead to the construction o
Critical frontier for the Potts and percolation models on triangular-type and kagome-type lattices II: Numerical analysis

In a recent paper (arXiv:0911.2514), one of us (FYW) considered the Potts model and bond and site percolation on two general classes of two-dimensional lattices, the triangular-type and kagome-type lattices, and obtained closed-form expressions for the critical frontier with applications to various lattice models. For the triangular-type lattices Wu's re

We show that a form for the second partial derivative of $1/r$ proposed by Frahm and subsequently used by other workers applies only when averaged over smooth functions. We use dyadic notation to derive a more general form without that restriction.

We study the droplet that results from conditioning the subcritical Fortuin-Kasteleyn planar random cluster model on the presence of an open circuit Gamma_0 encircling the origin and enclosing an area of at least (or exactly) n^2. In this paper, we prove that the resulting circuit is highly regular: we define a notion of a regeneration site in such a way tha
Phase separation in random cluster models II: the droplet at equilibrium, and local deviation lower bounds

We study the droplet that results from conditioning the subcritical Fortuin-Kasteleyn planar random cluster model on the presence of an open circuit Gamma_0 encircling the origin and enclosing an area of at least (or exactly) n^2. We consider local deviation of the droplet boundary, measured in a radial sense by the maximum local roughness, MLR(Gamma_0), thi

This is the first in a series of three papers that addresses the behaviour of the droplet that results, in the percolating phase, from conditioning the Fortuin-Kasteleyn planar random cluster model on the presence of an open dual circuit Gamma_0 encircling the origin and enclosing an area of at least (or exactly) n^2. (By the Fortuin-Kasteleyn representation

We prove the periodicity conjecture for pairs of Dynkin diagrams using Fomin-Zelevinsky's cluster algebras and their (additive) categorification via triangulated categories.

Let $k$ be a field and suppose $p, q\in k$. We prove that the two affine Hecke algebras $H_q$ and $H_p$ of type $A_n$ are isomorphic as $k$-algebras if and only if $p=q^{\pm 1}$.

We study the spectrum of an invariant, elliptic, classical pseudodifferential operator on a closed G-manifold M, where G is a compact, connected Lie group acting effectively and isometrically on M. Using resolution of singularities, we determine the asymptotic distribution of eigenvalues along the isotypic components, and relate it with the reduction of the

The topological superfluid 3He-B provides many examples of the interplay of symmetry and topology. Here we consider the effect of magnetic field on topological properties of 3He-B. Magnetic field violates the time reversal symmetry. As a result, the topological invariant supported by this symmetry ceases to exist; and thus the gapless fermions on the surface

Future high-precision flavor experiments may discover a pattern of deviations from the standard model predictions for flavor-changing neutral current processes. One of the interesting questions that can be answered then will be whether the flavor structure of the new physics is related to that of the standard model or not. We analyze this aspect of flavor ph

We compute electromagnetic properties of the Be-11 nucleus using an effective field theory that exploits the separation of scales in this halo system. We fix the parameters of the EFT from measured data on levels and scattering lengths in the Be-10 plus neutron system. We then obtain predictions for the B(E1) strength of the 1/2^+ to 1/2^- transition in the

These lecture notes present an introduction to the fuzzball proposal and emission from the D1-D5 system which is geared to an audience of graduate students and others with little background in the subject. The presentation begins with a discussion of the Penrose process and Hawking radiation. The fuzzball proposal is then introduced, and the two- and three-c

Let $p\in(1,\infty)$, $q\in[1,\infty)$, $s\in\mathbb{R}$ and $τ\in[0, 1-\frac{1}{\max\{p,q\}}]$. In this paper, the authors establish the $φ$-transform characterizations of Besov-Hausdorff spaces $B{\dot H}_{p,q}^{s,τ}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and Triebel-Lizorkin-Hausdorff spaces $F{\dot H}_{p,q}^{s,τ}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ ($q>1$); as applications, the authors then establi

We use cold neutron spectroscopy to study the low-energy spin excitations of superconducting (SC) FeSe$_{0.4}$Te$_{0.6}$ and essentially non-superconducting (NSC) FeSe$_{0.45}$Te$_{0.55}$. In contrast to BaFe$_{2-x}$(Co,Ni)$_{x}$As$_2$, where the low-energy spin excitations are commensurate both in the SC and normal state, the normal-state spin excitations i

We study the hidden sector effects to the mass renormalization of a simplest gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking scenario. We point out that possible hidden sector contributions render the soft scalar masses smaller, resulting in drastically different sparticle mass spectrum at low energy. In particular, in the ${\bf 5}+\bar{\bf 5}$ minimal gauge mediated

We analyze the equilibrium transport properties of underscreened Kondo effect in the case of a two-level quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads. Using the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method, we have determined the gate voltage dependence of the dot's spin and level-resolved spectral functions. We have shown that the polarization of the dot

We obtain some theoretic and experimental results concerning various properties (the number of fixed points, image distribution, cycle lengths) of the dynamical system naturally associated with Fermat quotients acting on the set $\{0, ..., p-1\}$. We also consider pseudorandom properties of Fermat quotients such as joint distribution and linear complexity.
