We report a search for the rare decays $B^+ \to D^+ K^0$ and $B^+ \to D^+ K^{*0}$ in an event sample of approximately 465 million $B\bar B$ pairs collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider at SLAC. We find no significant evidence for either mode and we set 90\% probability upper limits on the branching fractions of $B

We have realized a fiber-based Fabry-Perot cavity with CO2 laser-machined mirrors. It combines very small size, high finesse F>=130000, small waist and mode volume, and good mode matching between the fiber and cavity modes. This combination of features is a major advance for cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED), as shown in recent CQED experiments with Bose

Quantum theory is a tremendously successful physical theory, but nevertheless suffers from two serious problems: the measurement problem and the problem of interpretational underdetermination. The latter, however, is largely overlooked as a genuine problem of its own. Both problems concern the doctrine of realism, but pull, quite curiously, into opposite dir

We consider a four-dimensional simplicial complex and the minisuperspace general relativity system described by the metric flat in the most part of the interior of every 4-simplex with exception of a thin layer of thickness $\propto \varepsilon$ along the every three-dimensional face where the metric undergoes jump between the two 4-simplices sharing this fa

Integration over connection type variables in the path integral for the discrete form of the first order formulation of general relativity theory is studied. The result (a generalized function of the rest of variables of the type of tetrad or elementary areas) can be defined through its moments, i. e. integrals of it with the area tensor monomials. In our pr
Measurement of neutral current coherent neutral pion production on carbon in a few-GeV neutrino beam

The SciBooNE Collaboration reports a measurement of neutral current coherent neutral pion production on carbon by a muon neutrino beam with average energy 0.8 GeV. The separation of coherent from inclusive neutral pion production has been improved by detecting recoil protons from resonant neutral pion production. We measure the ratio of the neutral current c

This letter shows that linear Cellular Automata based on rules 90/150 generate all the solutions of linear difference equations with binary constant coefficients. Some of these solutions are pseudo-random noise sequences with application in cryptography: the sequences generated by the class of shrinking generators. Consequently, this contribution show that s

It is well understood that the studies of correlations between produced particles, the effects of coherence and chaoticity, an estimation of particle emitting source size play an important role in high energy physics [1]. We mean the investigation of the space-time extension or even squeezing of particle sources via the multiparticle quantum-statistics corre

We report the Suzaku observation of 1E 1740.7-2942, a black hole candidate called the "Great Annihilator" (GA). The high-quality spectrum of Suzaku provides the severest constraints on the parameters of the GA. Two clumpy structures are found around the GA in the line images of FeI Kalpha at 6.4 keV and SXV Kalpha at 2.45 keV. One clump named M359.23

The main objective of this work is twofold. On the one hand, it gives a brief overview of the area of two-party cryptographic protocols. On the other hand, it proposes new schemes and guidelines for improving the practice of robust protocol design. In order to achieve such a double goal, a tour through the descriptions of the two main cryptographic primitive

The main goal of this work is to propose the design of secret sharing schemes based on hard-on-average problems. It includes the description of a new multiparty protocol whose main application is key management in networks. Its unconditionally perfect security relies on a discrete mathematics problem classiffied as DistNP-Complete under the average-case anal

An efficient algorithm for computing lower bounds on the global linear complexity of nonlinearly filtered PN-sequences is presented. The technique here developed is based exclusively on the realization of bit wise logic operations, which makes it appropriate for both software simulation and hardware implementation. The present algorithm can be applied to any

In April 2009, we introduced a model representing the evolution of motor fuel price (a subcategory of the consumer price index of transportation) relative to the overall CPI as a linear function of time. Under our framework, all price deviations from the linear trend are transient and the price must promptly return to the trend. Specifically, the model predi

We present an efficient quantum entanglement distribution over an arbitrary collective-noise channel. The basic idea in the present scheme is that two parties in quantum communication first transmit the entangled states in the frequency degree of freedom which suffers little from the noise in an optical fiber. After the two parties share the photon pairs, th

We study the properties of the vertex operator for the beta-deformation of the superstring in AdS(5) x S(5) in the pure spinor formalism. We discuss the action of supersymmetry on the infinitesimal beta-deformation, the application of the homological perturbation theory, and the relation between the worldsheet description and the spacetime supergravity descr

In Bayesian machine learning, conjugate priors are popular, mostly due to mathematical convenience. In this paper, we show that there are deeper reasons for choosing a conjugate prior. Specifically, we formulate the conjugate prior in the form of Bregman divergence and show that it is the inherent geometry of conjugate priors that makes them appropriate and

Quark lepton universality inherent in grand unified theories based on $SO(10)$ gauge group generically leads to hierarchical neutrino masses. We propose a specific ansatz for the structure of Yukawa matrices in $SO(10)$ models which differ from this generic expectations and lead to quasi degenerate neutrinos through the type-I seesaw mechanism. Consistency o

The high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object RGB J0710+591 was observed in the very high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) wave band by the VERITAS array of atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The observations, taken between 2008 December and 2009 March and totaling 22.1 hr, yield the discovery of VHE gamma rays from the source. RGB J0710+591 is detected at a statisti

We study effects of strong fluctuations on the transport properties of superconductors near the classical critical point. In this regime conductivity is set by the delicate interplay of two competing effects. The first is that strong electron-electron interactions in the Cooper channel increase the life-time of fluctuation Cooper pairs and thus enhance condu

We present a systematic approach for calculating higher-order derivatives of smooth functions on a uniform grid using Padé approximants. We illustrate our findings by deriving higher-order approximations using traditional second-order finite-differences formulas as our starting point. We employ these schemes to study the stability and dynamical properties of
Spitzer Analysis of HII Region Complexes in the Magellanic Clouds: Determining a Suitable Monochromatic Obscured Star Formation Indicator

HII regions are the birth places of stars, and as such they provide the best measure of current star formation rates (SFRs) in galaxies. The close proximity of the Magellanic Clouds allows us to probe the nature of these star forming regions at small spatial scales. We aim to determine the monochromatic IR band that most accurately traces the bolometric IR f

We present an efficient and economic scheme for five-party quantum state sharing of an arbitrary m-qubit state with $2m$ three-particle Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states and three-particle GHZ-state measurements. It is more convenient than other schemes as it only resorts to three-particle GHZ states and three-particle joint measurement, not five-part
