The implementation of a spin qubit in a quantum ring occupied by one or a few electrons is proposed. Quantum bit involves the Zeeman sublevels of the highest occupied orbital. Such a qubit can be initialized, addressed, manipulated, read out and coherently coupled to other quantum rings. An extensive discussion of relaxation and decoherence is presented. By

A molecular sieve for hydrogen is presented based on a carbon nanotube intramolecular junction and a $C_{60}$. The small interspace formed between $C_{60}$ and junction provides a size changeable channel for the permselectivity of hydrogen while blocking $Ne$ and $Ar$. The sieving mechanism is due to the high compressibility of hydrogen.

A variety of applications are emerging to support streaming video from mobile devices. However, many tasks can benefit from streaming specific content rather than the full video feed which may include irrelevant, private, or distracting content. We describe a system that allows users to capture and stream targeted video content captured with a mobile device.

Cross section data from the HARP experiment for pion production by protons from a tantalum target have been convoluted with the acceptance of the front-end channel for the proposed neutrino factory or muon collider and integrated over the full phase space measured by HARP, to determine the beam-energy dependence of the muon yield. Quasi-Monte Carlo rules are equal weight quadrature rules defined over the domain $[0,1]^s$. Here we introduce quasi-Monte Carlo type rules for numerical integration of functions defined on $\mathbb{R}^s$. These rules are obtained by way of some transformation of digital nets such that locally one obtains qMC rules, but at the same time, globally one also ha

We develop an algorithm for computing the solution of a large system of linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with polynomial inhomogeneity. This is equivalent to computing the action of a certain matrix function on the vector representing the initial condition. The matrix function is a linear combination of the matrix exponential and other functions

Powder-snow avalanches are violent natural disasters which represent a major risk for infrastructures and populations in mountain regions. In this study we present a novel model for the simulation of avalanches in the aerosol regime. The second scope of this study is to get more insight into the interaction process between an avalanche and a rigid obstacle.

We study the effects of noise-intensity fluctuations on the stationary and dynamical properties of an overdamped Langevin model with a bistable potential and external periodical driving force. We calculated the stationary distributions, mean-first passage time (MFPT) and the spectral amplification factor using a complete set expansion (CSE) technique. We fou

We propose a simple model for dark energy useful for comparison with observations. It is based on the idea that dark energy and inflation should be caused by the same physical process. As motivation, we note that Linde's simple chaotic inflation $V=(1/2)m^{2}ϕ^{2}$ produces values of $n_{s}=0.967$ and $r=0.13$, which are consistent with the WMAP 1-sigma

A stationary random graph is a random rooted graph whose distribution is invariant under re-rooting along the simple random walk. Active Learning Method (ALM) is a soft computing method which is used for modeling and control, based on fuzzy logic. We study the transport dynamics of matter-waves in the presence of disorder and nonlinearity. An atomic Bose-Einstein condensate that is localized in a quasiperiodic lattice in the absence of atom-atom interaction shows instead a slow expansion with a subdiffusive behavior when a controlled repulsive interaction is added. The measured features of the subdiff

Regenerating codes are a class of recently developed codes for distributed storage that, like Reed-Solomon codes, permit data recovery from any subset of k nodes within the n-node network. However, regenerating codes possess in addition, the ability to repair a failed node by connecting to an arbitrary subset of d nodes. It has been shown that for the case o

We report on the electronic structure of the perovskite oxide CaCrO3 using valence-band, core-level, and Cr 2p - 3d resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES). Despite its antiferromagnetic order, a clear Fermi edge characteristic of a metal with dominant Cr 3d character is observed in the valence band spectrum. The Cr 3d single particle density of states are

We investigate the open mirror symmetry of certain non-complete intersection Calabi- Yau 3-folds, so called pfaffian Calabi-Yau. We perform the prediction of the number of disk invariants of several examples by using the direct integration method proposed recently and the open mirror symmetry. We treat several pfaffian Calabi-Yau 3-folds in $\mathbb{P}^6$ an

We develop some computational methods for the integrals over the 3-chains on the compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds that plays a prominent role in the analysis of the topological B-model in the context of the open mirror symmetry. We discuss such 3-chain integrals in two approaches. In the first approach, we provide a systematic algorithm to obtain the inhomogeneous

We present an analytic technique for evaluating single cuts for one-loop integrands, where exactly one propagator is taken to be on shell. Our method extends the double-cut integration formalism of one-loop amplitudes to the single-cut case. We argue that single cuts give meaningful information about amplitudes when taken at the integrand level. We discuss a

We investigate out of equilibrium transport through an orbital Kondo system realized in a single quantum dot, described by the multiorbital impurity Anderson model. Shot noise and current are calculated up to the third order in bias voltage in the particle-hole symmetric case, using the renormalized perturbation theory. The derived expressions are asymptotic

Shioda described in his article from 1986 a method to compute the Lefschetz number of a Delsarte surface. In one of his examples he uses this method to compute the rank of an elliptic curve over k(t). In this article we find all elliptic curves over k(t) for which his method is applicable. For each of these curves we also compute the Mordell-Weil rank.

We discuss how the curvature and the strain density of the atomic lattice generate the quantization of graphene sheets as well as the dynamics of geometric quasiparticles propagating along the constant curvature/strain levels. The internal kinetic momentum of Riemannian oriented surface (a vector field preserving the Gaussian curvature and the area) is deter

Given a birth-death process on $\mathbb {N}$ with semigroup $(P_t)_{t\geq0}$ and a discrete gradient ${\partial}_u$ depending on a positive weight $u$, we establish intertwining relations of the form ${\partial}_uP_t=Q_t\,{\partial}_u$, where $(Q_t)_{t\geq0}$ is the Feynman-Kac semigroup with potential $V_u$ of another birth-death process. We provide applica

Properties of local Polyakov loops for SU(2) and SU(3) lattice gauge theory at finite temperature are analyzed. We show that spatial clusters can be identified where the local Polyakov loops have values close to the same center element. For a suitable definition of these clusters the deconfinement transition can be characterized by the onset of percolation i

Measurement of redshifted 21-cm emission from neutral hydrogen promises to be the most effective method for studying the reionisation history of hydrogen and, indirectly, the first galaxies. These studies will be limited not by raw sensitivity to the signal, but rather, by bright foreground radiation from Galactic and extragalactic radio sources and the Gala

A unicellular map is the embedding of a connected graph in a surface in such a way that the complement of the graph is simply connected. In a famous article, Harer and Zagier established a formula for the generating function of unicellular maps counted according to the number of vertices and edges. The keystone of their approach is a counting formula for uni

The occurrence of statistical ensemble inequivalence is shown to be related to previously observed phase transitions in the equilibrium fl

We consider random dynamics on the edges of a uniform Cayley tree with $n$ vertices, in which edges are either inflammable, fireproof, or burt. Every inflammable edge is replaced by a fireproof edge at unit rate, while fires start at smaller rate $n^{-α}$ on each inflammable edge, then propagate through the neighboring inflammable edges and are only stopped

The Balian-Vénéroni (BV) variational principle, which optimizes the evolution of the state according to the relevant observable in a given variational space, is used at the mean-field level to determine the particle number fluctuations in fragments of many-body systems. For fermions, the numerical evaluation of such fluctuations requires the use of a time-de
