Estimating long term behavior of flows without trajectory integration: the infinitesimal generator approach
math.NAGary Froyland, Oliver Junge, Péter Koltai
The long-term distributions of trajectories of a flow are described by invariant densities, i.e. fixed points of an associated transfer operator. In addition, global slowly mixing structures, such as almost-invariant sets, which partition phase space into regions that are almost dynamically disconnected, can also be identified by certain eigenfunctions of th

The Structure and Dynamics of an AGN Torus: CO Line Predictions for ALMA from 3D Hydrodynamical Simulations with X-ray Driven Chemistry
astro-ph.GAJuan-Pablo Perez-Beaupuits, Keiichi Wada, Marco Spaans
Many efforts have been made to model the mass distribution and dynamical evolution of the circumnuclear gas in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, chemical evolution is not included in detail in three-dimensional (3-D) hydrodynamic simulations. The X-ray radiation from the AGN can drive the gas chemistry and affect the thermodynamics, as well as the exci

Let $p_n$ denote the number of self-avoiding polygons of length $n$ on a regular three-dimensional lattice, and let $p_n(K)$ be the number which have knot type $K$. The probability that a random polygon of length $n$ has knot type $K$ is $p_n(K)/p_n$ and is known to decay exponentially with length. Little is known rigorously about the asymptotics of $p_n(K)$

Shell model calculations using realistic interactions reveal that the ground and low-lying yrast states of the $N=Z$ nucleus $^{92}_{46}$Pd are mainly built upon isoscalar neutron-proton pairs each carrying the maximum angular momentum J=9 allowed by the shell $0g_{9/2}$ which is dominant in this nuclear region. This structure is different from the ones foun

We consider a random walk on a supercritical Galton-Watson tree with leaves, where the transition probabilities of the walk are determined by biases that are randomly assigned to the edges of the tree. The biases are chosen independently on distinct edges, each one according to a given law that satisfies a logarithmic non-lattice condition. We determine the

In this note, we discuss the basic elements that should appear in a gravitational system dual to a confining gauge theory displaying color superconductivity at large baryon density. We consider a simple system with these minimal elements, and show that for a range of parameters, the phase structure of this model as a function of temperature and baryon chemic

The properties of nearby galaxies that can be observed in great detail suggest that a better theory rather than cold dark matter (CDM) would describe in a better way a mechanism by which matter is more rapidly gathered into large-scale structure such as galaxies and groups of galaxies. In this work we develop and simulate a hydrodynamical approach for the ea

A sufficient condition for the uniqueness of multinomial sequential unbiased estimators is provided generalizing a classical result for binomial samples. Unbiased estimators are applied to infer the parameters of multidimensional or multinomial Random Walks which are observed until they reach a boundary. An application to clinical trials is presented.
Optical and DC conductivity of the two-dimensional Hubbard model in the pseudogap regime and across the antiferromagnetic quantum critical point, including vertex corrections
cond-mat.str-elDominic Bergeron, Vasyl Hankevych, Bumsoo Kyung, A. -M. S. Tremblay
The conductivity of the two-dimensional Hubbard model is particularly relevant for high-temperature superconductors. Vertex corrections are expected to be important because of strongly momentum dependent self-energies. We use the Two-Particle Self-Consistent approach that satisfies crucial constraints such as the Mermin-Wagner theorem, the Pauli principle an

We determine the capacity region of the secure multiplex coding with a common message, and evaluate the mutual information and the equivocation rate of a collection of secret messages to the second receiver (eavesdropper), which were not evaluated by Yamamoto et al.
Pointing the James Webb Space Telescope through lensing clusters - can the first stars and galaxies be detected?
astro-ph.COE. Zackrisson
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), scheduled for launch in 2014, is expected to revolutionize our understanding of the high-redshift Universe. Even so, many of the most interesting sources that may be hiding at redshifts z~10 (population III stars, dark stars, population III galaxies) are likely to be intrinsically too faint for JWST. Here, we explore th
Current injection by coherent one- and two-photon excitation in graphene and its bilayer
cond-mat.mtrl-sciJ. Rioux, Guido Burkard, J. E. Sipe
Coherent control of optically-injected carrier distributions in single and bilayer graphene allows the injection of electrical currents. Using a tight-binding model and Fermi's golden rule, we derive the carrier and photocurrent densities achieved via interference of the quantum amplitudes for two-photon absorption at a fundamental frequency, $ω$, and on
Who is the best player ever? A complex network analysis of the history of professional tennis
physics.soc-phFilippo Radicchi
We consider all matches played by professional tennis players between 1968 and 2010, and, on the basis of this data set, construct a directed and weighted network of contacts. The resulting graph shows complex features, typical of many real networked systems studied in literature. We develop a diffusion algorithm and apply it to the tennis contact network in

Planetary migration poses a serious challenge to theories of planet formation. In gaseous and planetesimal disks, migration can remove planets as quickly as they form. To explore migration in a planetesimal disk, we combine analytic and numerical approaches. After deriving general analytic migration rates for isolated planets, we use N-body simulations to co

The emergence of the first sources of light at redshifts of z ~ 10-30 signaled the transition from the simple initial state of the Universe to one of increasing complexity. We review recent progress in our understanding of the formation of the first stars and galaxies, starting with cosmological initial conditions, primordial gas cooling, and subsequent coll
The star cluster - field star connection in nearby spiral galaxies. II. Field star and cluster formation histories and their relation
astro-ph.COEsteban Silva-Villa, Soeren Larsen
Recent studies have started to cast doubt on the assumption that most stars are formed in clusters. Observational studies of field stars and star cluster systems in nearby galaxies can lead to better constraints on the fraction of stars forming in clusters. We aim to constrain the amount of star formation happening in long-lived clusters for four galaxies th

Recent measurements by the Pierre Auger Observatory suggest that the composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) becomes dominated by heavy nuclei at high energies. However, until now there has been no astrophysical motivation for considering a source highly enriched in heavy elements. Here we demonstrate that the outflows from Gamma-Ray Bursts (GR

Weak gravitational lensing has become a powerful probe of large-scale structure and cosmological parameters. Precision weak lensing measurements require an understanding of the intrinsic alignment of galaxy ellipticities, which can in turn inform models of galaxy formation. It is hypothesized that elliptical galaxies align with the background tidal field and

Scattering from a compound barrier, one composed of a number of distinct non-overlapping sub-barriers, has a number of interesting and subtle mathematical features. If one is scattering classical particles, where the wave aspects of the particle can be ignored, the transmission probability of the compound barrier is simply given by the product of the transmi

We develop the superspace geometry of N-extended conformal supergravity in three space-time dimensions. General off-shell supergravity-matter couplings are constructed in the cases N=1,2,3,4.

We propose a simple scenario which explains the observed matter-antimatter imbalance and the origin of dark matter in the Universe. We use the Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory of gravity which naturally extends general relativity to include the intrinsic spin of matter. Spacetime torsion produced by spin generates, in the classical Dirac equation, the He
The Efficacy of Galaxy Shape Parameters in Photometric Redshift Estimation: A Neural Network Approach
astro-ph.COJ. Singal, M. Shmakova, B. Gerke, R. L. Griffith
We present a determination of the effects of including galaxy morphological parameters in photometric redshift estimation with an artificial neural network method. Neural networks, which recognize patterns in the information content of data in an unbiased way, can be a useful estimator of the additional information contained in extra parameters, such as thos
