A Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) modulated by a fast oscillating magnetic flux can be used as a parametric amplifier, providing gain with very little added noise. Here, we develop linearized models to describe the parametrically flux-pumped SQUID in terms of an impedance. An unpumped SQUID acts as an inductance, the Josephson inductance,

    We have introduced Faddeev-Niemi type variables for static SU(3) Yang-Mills theory. The variables suggest that a non-linear sigma model whose sigma fields take values in SU(3)/(U(1)xU(1)) and SU(3)/(SU(2)xU(1)) may be relevant to infrared limit of the theory. Shabanov showed that the energy functional of the non-linear sigma model is bounded from below by ce

    We compute the exact vacuum expectation value of 1/2 BPS circular Wilson loops of ${\cal N}$=4 U(N) super Yang-Mills in arbitrary irreducible representations. By localization arguments, the computation reduces to evaluating certain integrals in a Gaussian matrix model, which we do using the method of orthogonal polynomials. Our results are particularly simpl

    The upcoming direct detection of gravitational waves will open a window to probing the strong-field regime of general relativity (GR). We will describe how logarithmic singularities arise as limits of Coulomb Gas integrals. Our approach will combine analytic properties of the time-like Liouville structure constants, together with the recursive formula of the Virasoro conformal blocks. We present BV photometry for 54 variables in the metal-rich inner halo globular cluster NGC6723. With the discovery of new RR Lyrae variables (RRLs), we obtain <P_ab> = 0.541 +/- 0.066 and <P_c> = 0.292 +/- 0.030 day, n(c)/n(ab+c) = 0.167, and <V(RR)>_int = 15.459 +/- 0.055. We study the competing effects of simultaneous Markovian and non-Markovian decoherence mechanisms acting on a single spin. We show the existence of a threshold in the relative strength of such mechanisms above which the spin dynamics becomes fully Markovian, as revealed by the use of several non-Markovianity measures. We identify a measure-dependent nested s

    The advent of quantum optical techniques based on superconducting circuits has opened new regimes in the study of the non-linear interaction of light with matter. Of particular interest has been the creation of non-classical states of light, which are essential for continuous-variable quantum information processing, and could enable quantum-enhanced measurem

    We present a proof of qualitative stochastic homogenization for a nonconvex Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The new idea is to introduce a family of "sub-equations" and to control solutions of the original equation by the maximal subsolutions of the latter, which have deterministic limits by the subadditive ergodic theorem and maximality.

    Torus networks of moderate degree have been widely used in the supercomputer industry. Tori are superb when used for executing applications that require near-neighbor communications. We present a gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking model having weak SU(2) triplet, color SU(3) octet and SU(5) 5-plet messengers, that can simultaneously explain the muon $(g-2)$ data within 1$σ$ and the observed Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV. Gauge coupling unification is nontrivially maintained. Most of the parameter space satisfying both is accessible to t

    Suppose $k$ centers are fit to $m$ points by heuristically minimizing the $k$-means cost; what is the corresponding fit over the source distribution? This question is resolved here for distributions with $p\geq 4$ bounded moments; in particular, the difference between the sample cost and distribution cost decays with $m$ and $p$ as $m^{\min\{-1/4, -1/2+2/p\}

    We consider non-autonomous wave equations \[ \left\{ \begin{aligned} \&\ddot u(t) + \B(t)\dot u(t) + \A(t)u(t) = f(t) \quad t\text{-a.e.}\\ \&u(0)=u_0,\, \dot u(0) = u_1. \end{aligned} \right. \] where the operators $\A(t)$ and $\B(t)$ are associated with time-dependent sesquilinear forms $\fra(t,.,.)$ and $\frb$ defined on a Hilbert space $H$ with the same

    We present multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) H$_2$O maser observations toward the massive young stellar objects (YSOs) VLA 2 and VLA 3 in the star-forming region AFGL 2591. Through these observations, we have extended the study of the evolution of the masers towards these objects up to a time span of $\sim$ 10 yrs, measuring their radial velocities

    We show that simple explicit formulas can be obtained for several relevant quantities related to the laws of the uniformly sampled Brownian bridge, Brownian meander and three dimensional Bessel process. To prove such results, we use the distribution of a triplet of random variables associated to the pseudo-Brownian bridge together with various relationships

    In supersymmetric theories, the $R$ symmetry plays a unique role in suppressing a constant term in the superpotential. In single chiral field models of spontaneous breaking of a discrete $R$ symmetry, an $R$-breaking field can be a good candidate for an inflaton in new inflation models. In this paper, we revisit the compatibility of the single-field $R$-brea

    As the etymology of the word shows, logic is intimately related to language, as exemplified by the work of philosophers from Antiquity and from the Middle-Age. At the beginning of the XX century, the crisis of the foundations of mathematics invented mathematical logic and imposed logic as a language-based foundation for mathematics. How did the relations bet

    In stochastic bandit problems, a Bayesian policy called Thompson sampling (TS) has recently attracted much attention for its excellent empirical performance. However, the theoretical analysis of this policy is difficult and its asymptotic optimality is only proved for one-parameter models. In this paper we discuss the optimality of TS for the model of normal

    Along the lines of Janssen's and Pfanzagl's work the testing theory for statistical functionals is further developed for non-parametric one-sample problems. Efficient tests for the one-sided and two-sided problems are derived for nonparametric statistical functionals. The asymptotic power function is calculated under implicit alternatives and hypothe

    The energy recovery linac test facility (ERL-TF), a compact ERL-FEL (free electron laser) two-purpose machine, was proposed at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Beijing. As one important component of the ERL-TF, the photo-injector started with a photocathode direct-current gun was designed and preliminarily optimized. In this paper an evolutionary geneti

    Demand side management (DSM) is a key solution for reducing the peak-time power consumption in smart grids. To provide incentives for consumers to shift their consumption to off-peak times, the utility company charges consumers differential pricing for using power at different times of the day. Consumers take into account these differential prices when decid

    A control software verification framework for gas turbine engines is developed. A stability proof is presented for gain scheduled closed-loop engine system based on global linearization and linear matrix inequality (LMI) techniques. Using convex optimization tools, a single quadratic Lyapunov function is computed for multiple linearizations near equilibrium

    The Traveling Tournament Problem (TTP) is a benchmark problem in sports scheduling and has been extensively studied in recent years. The Mirrored Traveling Tournament Problem (mTTP) is variation of the TTP that represents certain types of sports scheduling problems where the main objective is to minimize the total distance traveled by all the participating t

In the necessary conditions we suppose that the objective function and the active constraints are continuously differentiable. We introduce notions of KTSP-invex problem and second
