An agent-based computational economical toy model for the emergence of money from the initial barter trading, inspired by Menger's postulate that money can spontaneously emerge in a commodity exchange economy, is extensively studied. Understanding the evolution towards thermal equilibrium of an isolated quantum system is at the foundation of statistical mechanics and a subject of interest in such diverse areas as cold atom physics or the quantum mechanics of black holes. Since a pure state can never evolve into a thermal density matrix, the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) has
The clustering of galaxies in the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: Testing gravity with redshift-space distortions using the power spectrum multipoles
astro-ph.COFlorian Beutler, Shun Saito, Hee-Jong Seo, Jon Brinkmann
We analyse the anisotropic clustering of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) CMASS Data Release 11 (DR11) sample, which consists of $690\,827$ galaxies in the redshift range $0.43 < z < 0.7$ and has a sky coverage of $8\,498\,\text{deg}^2$. We perform our analysis in Fourier space using a power spectrum estimator suggested by Yamamoto et al. (

For normally reflected Brownian motion and for simple random walk on independently growing in time d-dimensional domains, d>=3, we establish a sharp criterion for recurrence versus transience in terms of the growth rate.

We study Maurer-Cartan elements on homotopy Poisson manifolds of degree $n$. They unify many twisted or homotopy structures in Poisson geometry and mathematical physics, such as twisted Poisson manifolds, quasi-Poisson $\g$-manifolds, and twisted Courant algebroids. Using the fact that the dual of an $n$-term $L_\infty$-algebra is a homotopy Poisson manifold

With the rapidly growing scales of statistical problems, subset based communication-free parallel MCMC methods are a promising future for large scale Bayesian analysis. In this article, we propose a new Weierstrass sampler for parallel MCMC based on independent subsets. The new sampler approximates the full data posterior samples via combining the posterior

Highly symmetric nano-shells are found in many biological systems, such as clathrin cages and viral shells. Several studies have shown that symmetric shells appear in nature as a result of the free energy minimization of a generic interaction between their constituent subunits. We examine the physical basis for the formation of symmetric shells, and using a

We prove that for any convex polygon $S$ with at least four sides, or a concave one with no parallel sides, and any $m>0$, there is an $m$-fold covering of the plane with homothetic copies of $S$ that cannot be decomposed into two coverings.

The aim of the present paper is to estimate and control the Type I and Type II errors of a simple hypothesis testing problem of the drift/viscosity coefficient for stochastic fractional heat equation driven by additive noise. Assuming that one path of the first $N$ Fourier modes of the solution is observed continuously over a finite time interval $[0,T]$, we
Bayesian Reconstruction of Two-Sex Populations by Age: Estimating Sex Ratios at Birth and Sex Ratios of Mortality
stat.APMark C. Wheldon, Adrian E. Raftery, Samuel J. Clark, Patrick Gerland
The original version of Bayesian reconstruction, a method for estimating age-specific fertility, mortality, migration and population counts of the recent past with uncertainty, produced estimates for female-only populations. Here we show how two-sex populations can be similarly reconstructed and probabilistic estimates of various sex ratio quantities obtaine
A Finite Element Method for Solving 2D Contact Problems with Coulomb Friction and Bilateral Constraints
physics.comp-phJie Zhang, Qi Wang
Based on the plenty method, this paper describes a numerical method for 2D non-smooth contact problems with Coulomb friction and bilateral constraints and its application to the simulation of statics and dynamics for a frictional translational joint. Comparison is made with results obtained using a finite element program, ANSYS.

We examine the Xeon Phi, which is based on Intel's Many Integrated Cores architecture, for its suitability to run the FDK algorithm--the most commonly used algorithm to perform the 3D image reconstruction in cone-beam computed tomography. We study the challenges of efficiently parallelizing the application and means to enable sensible data sharing betwee

In this paper we address the problem of recovering a matrix, with inherent low rank structure, from its lower dimensional projections. This problem is frequently encountered in wide range of areas including pattern recognition, wireless sensor networks, control systems, recommender systems, image/video reconstruction etc. Both in theory and practice, the mos

We describe a flexible, simple to build, low-cost, and computer-controlled optical mirror actuator system we developed for undergraduate research laboratories. Geared motors for hobby robotics are controlled by an Arduino microcontroller board in combination with an H bridge to finely position the mirror mount actuators. We present a graphical user interface
