It is known that hyperbolic spaces have strict negative type, a condition on the distances of any finite subset of points. We show that they have strong negative type, a condition on every probability distribution of points (with integrable distance to a fixed point). This implies that the function of expected distances to points determines the probability m

In this paper, we study completely faithful torsion $\mathbb{Z}_p[[G]]$-modules with applications to the study of Selmer groups. Namely, if $G$ is a nonabelian group belonging to certain classes of polycyclic pro-$p$ group, we establish the abundance of faithful torsion $\mathbb{Z}_p[[G]]$-modules, i.e., non-trivial torsion modules whose global annihilator i

Recent high resolution AIA/SDO images show evidence of the development of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, as coronal mass ejections (CMEs) expand in the ambient corona. A large-scale magnetic field mostly tangential to the interface is inferred, both on the CME and on the background sides. However, the magnetic field component along the shear flow is not s

We propose a modification of the hamiltonian formalism which can be used for dissipative systems. This work continues arXiv:0810.1419 and advances by the introduction of a symplectic version of the Brezis-Ekeland-Nayroles principle [Brezis Ekeland 1976] [Nayroles 1976]. Understanding the microscopic origins of electronic phases in high-transition temperature (high-Tc) superconductors is important for elucidating the mechanism of superconductivity. In the paramagnetic tetragonal phase of BaFe2-xTxAs2 (where T is Co or Ni) iron pnictides, an in-plane resistivity anisotropy has been observed. Here we use inelastic neutron scat
The Anomalous Compressibility and Metallization of Deuterium under Shock-Wave Compression
physics.plasm-phA. L. Khomkin, A. S. Shumikhin
High values of deuterium compressibility under shock-wave compression, recently discovered in several experiments, are explained by an unusual dielectric-metal phase transition from a dense molecular gas into a liquid-metal atomic gas. This phase transition recently described by authors was named the dissociative phase transition (DPT). The same phase transi
The temperature dependence of electronic eigenenergies in the adiabatic harmonic approximation
cond-mat.mtrl-sciSamuel Poncé, Gabriel Antonius, Yannick Gillet, Paul Boulanger
The renormalization of electronic eigenenergies due to electron-phonon interactions (temperature dependence and zero-point motion effect) is important in many materials. We address it in the adiabatic harmonic approximation, based on first principles (e.g. Density-Functional Theory), from different points of view: directly from atomic position fluctuations o

We present a scheme designed to suppress the dominant source of infidelity in entangling gates between quantum systems coupled through intermediate bosonic oscillator modes. Such systems are particularly susceptible to residual qubit-oscillator entanglement at the conclusion of a gate period which reduces the fidelity of the target entangling operation. We d
Mixed integer programming improves comprehensibility and plan quality in inverse optimization of prostate HDR-brachytherapy
physics.med-phBram L. Gorissen, Dick den Hertog, Aswin L. Hoffmann
Current inverse treatment planning methods that optimize both catheter positions and dwell times in prostate HDR brachytherapy use surrogate linear or quadratic objective functions that have no direct interpretation in terms of dose-volume histogram (DVH) criteria, do not result in an optimum or have long solution times. We decrease the solution time of exis

We investigate fibrancy conditions in the Thomason model structure on the category of small categories. In particular, we show that the category of weak equivalences of a partial model category is fibrant. Furthermore, we describe connections to calculi of fractions.

The modified scalar boson propagator due to the presence of a hyperplane semi-transparent mirror is computed. From this, the classical interaction between static charges and the mirror is investigated employing delta-like potentials and sources. Although the calculations for hyperplane mirrors are performed in arbitrary dimensions, and in a completely genera

We review the current understanding of the uniform two-dimensional (2D) Fermi gas with short-range interactions. We first outline the basics of two-body scattering in 2D, including a discussion of how such a 2D system may be realized in practice using an anisotropic confining potential. We then discuss the thermodynamic and dynamical properties of 2D Fermi g
An analytical expression for the exit probability of the q-voter model in one dimension
physics.soc-phAndré Martin Timpanaro, Serge Galam
We present in this paper an approximation that is able to give an analytical expression for the exit probability of the $q$-voter model in one dimension. This expression gives a better fit for the more recent data about simulations in large networks, and as such, departs from the expression $\frac{ρ^q}{ρ^q + (1-ρ)^q}$ found in papers that investigated small

The manuscript addresses the problem of finding all solutions of power flow equations or other similar nonlinear system of algebraic equations. This problem arises naturally in a number of power systems contexts, most importantly in the context of direct methods for transient stability analysis and voltage stability assessment. We introduce a novel form of h

Recurrence properties of systems and associated sets of integers that suffice for recurrence are classical objects in topological dynamics. We describe relations between recurrence in different sorts of systems, study ways to formulate finite versions of recurrence, and describe connections to combinatorial problems. In particular, we show that sets of Bohr

In this paper we formulate a transmission problem for the transient acoustic wave equation as a system of retarded boundary integral equations. We then analyse a fully discrete method using a general Galerkin semidiscretization-in-space and Convolution Quadrature in time. All proofs are developed using recent techniques based on the theory of evolution equat

Application of some basic notions and statistics of ageing distributions used in mathematical theory of reliability including the Gini-type index is discussed as a methodological tool for investigation of human population ageing and longevity. In opposite to the traditionally used median and mean lifetime, the GTI requires only one calendar year snap-shot da
Model independent study of massive lepton elastic scattering on the proton, beyond the Born approximation

Model independent expressions for all polarization observables in $μ+p\to μ+p$ elastic scattering are obtained, taking into account the lepton mass and including the two-photon exchange contribution. The spin structure of the matrix element is parametrized in terms of six independent complex amplitudes, functions of two independent kinematical variables. Gen

This paper is concerned with certifying that a given point is near an exact root of an overdetermined or singular polynomial system with rational coefficients. The difficulty lies in the fact that consistency of overdetermined systems is not a continuous property. Our certification is based on hybrid symbolic-numeric methods to compute the exact "rationa
The strongest gravitational lenses: IV. The order statistics of the largest Einstein radii with cluster mergers
astro-ph.COMatthias Redlich, Jean-Claude Waizmann, Matthias Bartelmann
Based on techniques developed in the previous papers of this series, we investigate the impact of galaxy-cluster mergers on the order statistics of the largest Einstein radii. We show that the inclusion of mergers significantly shifts the extreme value distribution of the largest Einstein radius to higher values, typically increasing the expected value by ${
